Re: Guess what I just ordered...
The original Winchesters did not distinguish or label the 1885 as Low Wall or High Wall. That was originally done by customers and avid fans of the 1885 and it now carries over to all the reproductions. Winchester just sold the gun as the 1885.markiver54 wrote:I too am not familiar of the difference. Will be curious as well.JEBar wrote:congrats indeed .... The Low Wall, as the name suggests, is just cut lower on the top receiver with more of the falling block exposed at the top. Essentially, there is less of the receiver to lock the block in place when the gun is closed. It was used to shave a little weight and also make loading a bit more convenient with cartridges that didn't need the extra strength of the full high wall versions. Even so, a Low Wall could easily handle lever gun cartridges like the 30-30 and the 45-70 - the 1885 in any configuration is one of the strongest actions ever invented - but, these days, manufacturers just use the High Wall version on those. Our 223, for instance, is a Low Wall, but it could certainly handle any super hot varmint cartridge made.
