The department rotated duty ammo every six months. Shooting the ammo carried in the firearms, and the reloads during training drills in addition to several boxes of practice ammo. We shot for qualification, then issued fresh duty ammo.

I started this program when I joined the department's instructional team.

I read the article above, and read through the comments. One comment you should ignore if you read through them is "hand load the first round into the chamber to avoid setback. This also avoids having to top off your magazines."

Please don't do that. When you insert a round in the semi-auto chamber by hand, then close the slide over it, your extractor rides OUT around the case rim, snapping back in to lock around the rim to extract when you fire. This stresses the extractor and can lead to breakage.

When the rounds feed from the magazine, they slide in behind the extractor from below per design, and the extractor helps guide them into the chamber, then extract the case on firing.

No stress on the part, reducing the chance of breakage.

Remove ammo when cleaning and lubricating firearms and magazines..do not lubricate ammo

Even if you never plan to carry concealed, if available, take a Good concealed carry class for your area. You will learn a lot you can use.

Then, you can apply for the permit. You may never use it, but you'll have it if you have to go out at 2am to fill a prescription, pick up someone who is broken down, or run someone to the ER.
