Interesting observation of hornaday ftx
This is 357, but I wonder if it correlates to 45 colt at all. I imagine it would.
the ftx is around 1836 fps out of a miroku
1903 out of a rossi

Re: Interesting observation of hornaday ftx
I played around loading FTX in my 357 when they first came out and couldnt find a reason to use them.
The gummy tip means they are long in the shank to keep OAL that will function, it eats into case capacity. End result was velocity only the same as what I get with 158 XTP or GDHP. Despite the gummy tip the BC of the FTX is actually worse than the XTP.
I can see no advantage to a lighter bullet with a poorer BC at the same velocity. I love the FTX in my 30/30 but in pistol cals I think they are a gimmick that offers no real advantage.

I'll say that I've had okay luck with hornaday's factory loads using the ftx, but reloading them. Well as new as I am, i think I am the problem.
I find that i like the 250 xtp's or 300 xtps more.

Re: Interesting observation of hornaday ftx
I have the Hornady FTX factory loads in 45 colt. The bullet went where I shot it so had no reason to compare it to something else.
I see no reason to reload using FTX bullets. Reload data says to resize cases shorter to accommodate the longer FTX bullet to meet colt 45 OAL. Naw I'll use another bullet to preserve case length for as long possible. I did decap one of the factory rounds to see how much Leverevolution powder was in one. When I went to reseat the bullet I found out I needed a pointed bullet seater to accommodate the pointy gummy tip. I ended up making a seater cup out of a washer with a hole in it.
I do keep the shorter factory brass separate from the other regular size 45 colt brass.

The sole purpose of the 'gummy' tip is to prevent the hollowpoint from getting clogged up with stuff that ain't meat. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

The purpose i thought was to keep the rounds from touching off in the mag tube under recoil.

Re: Interesting observation of hornaday ftx
It is. The product description makes that point clear. The tip is flexible for exactly that reason.

I prefer the xtp's to the ftx.

I am finding that the xtp seems to be better overall, and I don't have to trim brass.
