Ahhh, Them Good Ole Days…….

Post by Mr. Neutron » Sun Nov 06, 2022 4:10 pm

I realize this isn’t the Reloading forum, but…..
A good friend of mine no longer reloads for .30-30s, and he knew that I needed some primers and brass. So, in an act of what I consider truly great kindness, he gave me 3 boxes of Large Rifle Primers, and around 60-70 fired cases. Twenty of those cases came in this box:

I had to marvel at what the price was “back in the day” (25+ years ago, to the best of my memory), and how we used to be able to buy ammo at the local drug store. My, how things have changed. ;)

I also recall in my school years back in Oklahoma, some of the high school kids on the rifle team would hop on the bus with their .22 rifles and school books. We had a shooting range in the basement beside the plumbing for the pool. But that’s even further back in the early ‘70s………

And it's now more than just the price. Availability is also very much an issue for traditional sporting cartridges like the 30-30. Our local shop has been keeping what they have of 30-30 ammo in the backroom until the week before our upcoming rifle deer season. This is for the sake of having some 30-30 ammo when customers come in for it prior to deer season. Pretty sad when you have to ration 30-30 ammo.

Agreed. It’s nice that your local shop puts a little back for the hunters.

Availability is pretty much nil within 10 miles+ of my home. I have to travel farther to find 30-30 ammo, and when I do find it, I feel like I’ve been violated after paying for it.

I’ll quit my whine, & get back to cleaning my reloading bench. :D

Took a closer shot as it's very hard to read. $3.85
That's a box of 32 colt. I have no idea how old it may be.

Prices aside, I’m enjoying seeing the store brands on the price tags. Payless became Riteaid many years ago. Back in the day Payless had a nice sporting goods dept. And GI Joe stores, back in the 80’s I worked for a distributor and GI Joes was our biggest account. Then they had many stores in the western Oregon area and we shipped a big order to each weekly. Great company.

Mr. Neutron, I would think the GI Joes is still around as big as they were????? Correct?

GI Joes in Gresham, OR is now a Dick’s Sporting Goods store. I don’t know for certain Hatchdog, but I *think* they’re completely out of business now. Haven’t seen one in the Portland area nor any other towns that had those stores for many moons.

Added in EDIT: I guess there are still a few of those stores left in some towns in Oregon. I just never see any “locally” to where I live & travel.
