it can handle any commercial ammo that meets SSAMI standards .... as to any given shooter's ability to stand the recoil, well that's a much different question

Most animals are not armor plated and don't require a nuclear device to dispatch.
The venerable .45-70gvt can be downloaded to very comfortable shooting conditions and still be capable of taking whitetail deer.
Remember, the .45-70gvt started life as a low pressure black powder round.

That seems a little hot to me . If I were going after any of the big bears I should think a heavier bullet at a lower velocity would be a better choice as it would not break up before penetrating enough to do the job. Also do yourself a kindness and get a Past recoil pad that straps to your shoulder. My late friend used one to shoot his two bore rifle.

I wrote to Henry’s asking the same. They replied, “We would defer to the specialty ammo manufacturer in this case as they'll know which levels they're loading to.
Our .45-70 rifles fall into the 1895/modern lever category for action strength.
That allows for all commercial .45-70 loads except those listed "For Ruger No 1 Only."
I like having the ability to ask & appreciate each of you taking time to reply.
