Neighbor has this round and it appears to be military but I can't determine what it is. Appears to be from 1945 going by head stamp and the bullet measures .420 diameter. Bottle neck case is straight wall .470 and then necks to .442 straight. Case length is 1.260 and COL is 1.625
Rimless case head for some kind of automatic type gun. Primer pocket is about .201
Can't find it in any of my books. Anyone know what it might be? Case was drilled for a key chain.

Thanks Tom ! Still looking on the net and can't find anything like it. However RA could stand for Remington Arms.
This is a strange one!

I don't think this is a military cartridge. "RA" was not a military arsenal head stamp. This would be a "Remington Arms" cartridge from 1945. From what I know, that was the last year Remington used that head stamp. As for the caliber or actual cartridge designation, I'm lost.

Think I figured out what it is... I thought it felt a bit light for a case and bullet of that size. Put it on my scale and the thing weighs 140 gr. and that bullet alone should be around 200 or so grains. My conclusion is it could be a dummy round or some kind of display bullet for something.
However it measures very close to a .44-40 round but I don't get the rimless head part or the Remington stamp with a 1945 code.
Also the primer pocket was never finished drilled for the flash hole but the pocket is sized for a large rifle primer.

A lot of work went into it... possibly Remington made it!

Update.... I sent the info to an ammo collector and he thinks it started out as an unfinished Springfield 30-06 case that was shortened and reformed for a test or dummy round for some unknown caliber pistol. Now you think it was done in 1945 ??? Don't think it was done by some reloader in a garage!
Just wonder what kind of pistol that was being designed for it?
