Congrats on your first deer there Red, should make for some fine eating.
I hear on the shorter barrels, had a friend of mine shorten one of my Marlin 35 Rem.
Handy as can be in the woods and the hunting houses.
That's a fine lookin Marlin.

Re: Copper Bullets: Yes, No, Maybe So?
Thanks again guys!
The deer dropped about 20 yards from the road, and it’s normally gated, but was open, so the wife drove right up to me. I guess it pays to know where the deer are at, as it was way too easy. Today was spent butchering. I did one last year that my partner shot, as we split our meet and he shot two. It was a bit longer today doing it solo, but I was trying to get some specific cuts (the really thin ones outside the ribs to do roulades. It’s hard to shin quickly when the Met is 1/4” thick:)
And thanks for the compliments on the Marlin. It’s damn close to a Henry, and who knows, maybe I’ll scope my .44 BBSC this year and dial it in for next season. The .30-30 gives me comfort out to 150 yards though, and .44 I would only be super happy to about 90-100. That can make a big difference.

Oh, and you can definitely “eat right up to the hole” with the Barnes (factory 150s). Below is “the hole”, and the next shot is the waste pile. On the blue shop towel is the damaged meat. Not all of it is bullet damage. Some is cartilage.

The Italians do a “porchetta” which has pork belly fat on the outer so it’s crunchy as hell. Amazing. Germans (my family heritage) do rouladen. It typically individual sized rolls of thin beef or venison rolled around a 1/4 of a dill pickle, with a bit of mustard and sometimes onion inside, then braised in beef broth. Unbelievably delicious. The Italian version ends up about 6” around and a couple of feet long.

From the experience my friend had shooting deer with a 308 and copper bullets I'll never use them. They drill right through and leave a pin hole exit aka no blood trail, no shock like you would get from a lead bullet that mushrooms.
