Shock and Awe at the LGS !!!

My buddy called me while he was at our LGS to tell me they had some 22 ammo in stock but little else so I drove up there to look.
As I am walking down the aisle towards the ammo area you walk right by where the powder used to be kept. One shiny new 1 pound container of Unique and Herco caught my pollen filled eyes! Grabbed the pound of Unique but something didn't feel right....a tingle turned into a hit of 240 volts when I rotated the thing around and saw the price....$ 70.00

I let go of that hot bottle in an instant
Same price on the Herco....just plain INSANE !
So after letting out a yell and a minute to regain sense I go around the corner to ammo land. I saw a good bit of Speer Lawman .45 ACP at 35.00 per 50 box and grabbed the limit of 2. Yes even though I load it and have a decent amount of it I will buy it if within reason.
The 22 LR ammo was running 10 bucks for 50 of the CCI Quiets and 13 bucks for 50 of the CCI Stingers.
I walked out with just the .45 ACP.

You are a better man than I Forty. I would of let all of it sit because of the asking price on the powder. People like that dont need my money.

His prices are usually in reason during normal times. Now I don't know what powder is selling for from his distributors but wasn't going to spend for it as I have a good amount of it. Had it been the normal 24 bucks I would have grabbed it to add to the stock.
Ammo while somewhat available is more than it used to be. I grabbed 2 boxes and will add it to my reloaded target ammo. Save my primers and powder for the good SD loads. The ammo train has to catch way up before primers will be available again.

Got an email from Alliant Powder. They said the price was raised a small amount but nothing like that!

I made a trip yesterday for a LGS to pick up their order. From the invoice the gougers are not the manufacturers or the distributors. This was the powder dealer prices per pound.4350 powder was $23.73 ---7828 SC $24.28---H322 $26.26--- 4831 SC $26.40--- Varget $26.90. Everyone knows how primers are selling for 100's of dollars on the thousand. In the order the CCI small rifle were $35.05 and the CCI 450 were $38.99. Large rifle were close to the same price as small rifle. I believe the large magnum may have been a couple dollars more than standard. Looks to me like the price gougers might be the dealers. Didn't get as much as they wanted but I think things are heading toward better times but probably never back to a year or two ago.

Big shipment of Ammo expected at my local LGS this week..... I showed up right away in the morning after the truck arrived... They received 3 50 round boxes of 45 ACP and 3 boxes of 350 legend. :

..... Everyone was pretty disappointed. I didn't need either. Ha! Signs of our times!

That would be funny if it wasn't so typical right now. Things are just nuts with the ammo situation.

Im the first guy that will help out a fellow shooter if I have something he needs. To gouge people in the same field you are in business with just isnt something I could do. I would sure think that a LGS would attack more business trying to help rather than gouge when things do return to normal.

Is anyone making a list of these price gougers?

We havent really had supply shortages here in Aus, the exact load you want may not be available but usually something in the same cal is. Similar with components maybe not the brand of primer or powder available but certainly something that will do the job for the application needed.
Just had a quick look at one of the importers current stock levels on 22lr, plenty of loads not available but still has over 15million 22lr in stock and a similar amount arriving over the next month.
Sounds like a bit but really if we had a run on ammo it isnt even a single box for every shooter in the country.

The gouging isn't just in the ammo industry. I am in construction. (I'm a HVAC contractor) And prices are going absolutely crazy. I have been buying everything that I possibly can to cover us and our projects for the entire year of 2021. Not only are the prices going off the charts, but some items are getting tough to get. In years past every spring there is about a 3-5 percent increase for the year on certain items. This year all bets are off. Underground ductwork went up 10% last Monday, and then another 15% on Wednesday. Usually, my bids are good for 6 months, This year 15 days.
It has been driving me crazy.... Along with all of my builder, electrician, plumbing and insulating friends. It's going to be another long year.

It's supply and demand. Last year was an historic year for natural disasters in the USA, which resulted in high demand for construction materials and labor.

The billion-dollar events of 2020 included a record 7 disasters linked to tropical cyclones, 13 to severe storms, 1 to drought, and 1 to wildfires. The 22 events cost the nation a combined $95 billion in damages.

Yep..... But, no matter what the cause, it's disheartening.

Agreed. But, the way I see it is, we bite the bullet and suffer some short term pain... or
ignore the causes of climate change and suffer catastrophic long term pain. The science is clear; the climate is changing. Among reasonable people, there is no doubt. Future generations of our children are in play and it's not a game where the board can be reset if we lose.

How arrogant can we be to think that we, tiny mortals, can effect the planet. I don't think this is political...JMO!

OK. This is a friendly forum where ideas (other than political or religious) can be exchanged and discussed. And that's a good thing. Right?
I thought so.
So. I don't think it's arrogant to consider that "mere mortals" have had such an impact on the planet given our dominance (stewardship) of it. And yes! The climate has been changing since the beginning of time, though as stewards, we (oblivious) mortals have made a significant contribution to recently documented climate changes that have had catastrophic, costly, and existential effects.
You may disagree for a variety of political or religious reasons, which we will not discuss, but you can't provide a scientific, data driven argument that climate change is not the result of human activity. Or, can you?
Climate change includes both global warming driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases and the resulting large-scale shifts in weather patterns. Though there have been previous periods of climatic change, since the mid-20th century humans have had an unprecedented impact on Earth's climate system and caused change on a global scale.
The largest driver of warming is the emission of greenhouse gases, of which more than 90% are carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. Fossil fuel burning (coal, oil, and natural gas) for energy consumption is the main source of these emissions, with additional contributions from agriculture, deforestation, and manufacturing.
The human cause of climate change is not disputed by any scientific body of national or international standing. Temperature rise is accelerated or tempered by climate feedbacks, such as loss of sunlight-reflecting snow and ice cover, increased water vapour (a greenhouse gas itself), and changes to land and ocean carbon sinks.
