Fences

Post by BrokenolMarine » Wed Mar 18, 2026 5:19 pm

We got rid of the last of the large livestock last year right after Milk Fever took Tina's milk cow down after she had her calf. We kept the chickens for the eggs and the guineas to control bugs and snakes, and as alarms. Noisy buggers. :P

Tina loves to keep the place neat, and this means weedeating. So, I suggested removing a few of the fence lines, less to weedeat. We would, of course, keep the fencing along the road, the north and west property lines to mark the boundries. I suggested some cross fences could go. Better views for us, less weedeating.

Today I removed the clips from the barbed wire in several sessions. I broke the job up so had plenty of breaks. Tomorrow we'll roll the wire, and using the tractor, pull the T-Posts. The wire is old, and we'll toss. The posts we'll store, you never know. With the fence gone, it's a pass with the mower from now on.

Since you and Miss Tina have been around the block a few times you are probably aware of this post puller tool. But for others, here is a pic. I’ve used mine many times (and my son borrows it often) and it’s wonderful. Like you, I have removed much of the barbed wire cross fencing from our place up north. My wife’s uncle had several horses when he lived there and had cross fencing everywhere. We were concerned that the dogs might cut themselves on the barbs so got rid of as much as we could.

Those are nice, we use the bucket on the tractor. Loop a chain around the t-post, then come across the top of the chain and pull down. Lift up on the bucket, post pulls right out. Flick the loop off, on to the next post. Hydraulics does the heavy work.

We set posts the same way, place the post with the post driver on top, bucket comes down and boom, post drives slowly in to the depth you want. On to the next post. Post driver gives the tractor bucket a wider target.

Same methods used here.

I picked up one similar to that one from Harbor Freight. Works great when you need it.

I started on the East Property Line Fence. Here is a view of the East Fence Line when we first moved in. It is close to the house and makes the front yard area on that side of the house seem crowded.

Here is a view of the Back line on the 1.25 acre lot that the house sits on. It to crowds the back of my work shop, and makes the lot seem smaller than it is. When Tina flew out originally and looked at the house, neither of those fences were in place. They were added after we made an offer on the property.

As you can see, after we removed the unneeded fence along the east line, it's easier to mow and opens up the view and no longer feels crowded. The owner of the 60 acre hay field next to us had told Tina he had no problem with the removal of the fences, it would make harvesting his hay much easier as well. ;)

(There was a reason he asked the previous owner to put up the fences, but we won't get into that publicly. )

We love the look, and Tina loved mowing without having to worry about EASING between my shop and that fence line. The owner had given her permission to make a bush hog pass on HIS side of the fence when she was cutting OUR pastures, but she never did, worried about what she might hit.

Two views of the back fence line. It really opens up that view of the Back of the property and the view into our twenty acres to the west. Again, the mowing is SO much easier and no weedeating on the two old fence lines. We kept the Corner pieces in place to mark the property lines. I'll clean them up this summer and repaint them.

Miss T has gotten busy in her raised Garden beds planting carrots, asparagus, tomatoes, beans, cukes...
and in the front beds, more roses and other flowers. Should be looking good this summer. The bulbs are all coming in... that the deer didn't eat. And the other varmints.

Thanks Hatch, of course that hayfield isn't ours, but the Range, paddock, and the north pasture are. All that is to the west of the acre (Plus) that the house sits on. My friends back on the east coast used to give me grief when we lived an hour out of the metro area... it was quiet and secluded in the foothills of the mountains there. HERE we are even more out away from it all. Yes, we love it here. Things we miss from the old place are mostly the good friends we left behind and the Rivers and fishing spots we knew so well.

The North Pasture:

For reference, we would be up at the north fence line here, looking south toward the old barn and down toward the pond. The house and the shops are off to the upper left a ways.
