I tried a new fire lighting technique call the top down method. Oh goodness what a game changer! My fire started quick, spread evenly and warmed the porch quickly. I'm doing this method from now on! Loving it!
Stack your largest logs at the bottom of the stove, smaller sized next layer, smaller next layer, ect. Light fire from the top, and magic!!!

Interesting, I don't have a wood stove but have always started outdoor fires with smaller wood on the bottom, will try it next time I build a fire.

I use a pyramid type method. But, I may try. Thanks! I typically put smaller wood (kindling wood, leafs, paper, etc.) on the bottom. Then, I place larger wood over it in a teepee type shape. I use a similar shape when burning charcoals. Of course, lighter fluid is used also. Yet, coals seem to caught on quickly. Anyway, another method to have in the toolbox.

I'll bet that's the cat's favorite spot when the fire's going. I don't have a wood stove but 2 of my cats do occasionally lay on the furnace's floor vents, warm but not very soft.

I combine top and bottom. Putting some smaller stuff on the bottom with the bigger helps it get going fast. Starting the fire from the top also gets the cold air out of the chimney on really cold starts. Getting it to have a fast draft will aid in a cleaner start too.

Funny this same subject came up a few days ago on a camping forum.

Tis the season, I was at my son’s place Friday and he was burning the first fire in his new stove. He was taking about the top down method too.
