Re: Today's lawn tractor project....
Spent the morning and into the afternoon swapping out the troublesome 17 HP Briggs engine from the Troy Built lawn tractor for a smaller 10 HP Briggs
which has a better carb setup not prone to sticking float. Also it has the pull start option if needed which could be handy down in the woods.
Will use it as my tow tractor on the trails. My Kubota was a bit big with the front loader on it for that use.
Swap went fairly smooth with a couple issue to finish up. Have to make a 3/4 inch tall steering end link spacer so the link will clear the oil drain spout on engine. Also need a different style muffler that will clear the frame rail. Other than that it started, ran and forward and reverse speeds worked fine.
Used same engine belt drive pulley which made things easy.
The Ariens small lawn tractor the 10 HP engine was on was to low to the ground with the smaller tires and it was a rear mount engine which caused some issues along with a battery box that allowed only a smallish sized battery without much cranking reserve.

Re: Today's lawn tractor project....
Thanks! Spent the day finishing up the muffler install and was able to use the muffler off of the 17 HP engine with a few clearance mods needed to front frame bracket.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Re: Today's lawn tractor project....
Well the trail tractor project all finished up. The wiring harness was different of course between the two engines but got it sorted out and the alternator now charges the battery. Drove it around a good bit and shut it down then cranked it back up and no hot start issues. Fires right up in the morning every time and I think it will be a dependable tractor. Will load it up along with the small cargo trailer and haul it down to the range.
