Sunroom?

Post by Dahliathemeh » Sat Nov 28, 2020 2:12 pm

I have been pretty quiet on the forum lately. That's because we have been pretty busy around here turning the enclosed porch into a sunroom, three season room, add on? We started this project 3 years ago and stopped due to drywall disagreements.
I have been able to really think about my little room, and some additions. First the back porch had what looked like cardboard as wall coverings. Next there's nothing but a sheet of linolium on the floor. The windows were original to the house. They were rotted, cracked, and leaking. The windows were replaced, spray foam was used to plug the holes were joists and wall were not making contact. Next insulation was installed, both wool and reflective foil. One wall was drywalled with mold resistant sheets. This is where we stopped, the old door hinge was covered with said cardboard stuff, we left it open to install new security door.
Next, we insulated and sealed the floor from the outside. All this insulation, has resulted in our room being 30° warmer in that room than outside.
We installed a new gyro fan, which has a light kit.
And now the new addition, my little wood burning stove. I purchased it on Craigslist in September, and it needed love. After stripping it down to meteal due to some rust, I replaced the cracked glass, the broken fire brick, took off the warning lables, removed the heat shield. Cleaned it up, removed rust, purchased all missing gaskets, paint and rebuild. I finished my little monster 2 weeks ago.
We had to again stop due to better half being on furlough for a month. He just went back to work this week, I'm looking forward to continue the work, and have a working whatever you want to call it room.
I never take myself seriously....

Looks like it will be a great space. I would love a 3 seasons room but I have not been able to figure out how to do it without MAJOR reconstruction. Still thinking. Keep up the good work, it will pay off.

At 2:10 today (2-3) it's 36° outside. 75° is where our sunroom is at after all the insulation work. No stove yet, still need the connector pipe from stove to ceiling.

We have stopped construction for a little bit. Hoping to resume in less than a month. Hubby is building us a hearth pad, and we will soon start tiling.

Look’s good, wife and I starting 3 season room this summer. Told my sons to plan their summer vacations around that construction time.

Maybe ceiling could have been higher so you could stand up in there.... :)

That's the space between the floor of the porch and the ground in the yard. We were surprised it had concrete poured over it. It's usually dirt in these old spaces. It's also the area where you enter our basement from the outside.

Gonna start up construction again in the whatever you want to call it room. Mike has taken some time down from work this month. So by the end of the month, we should have the hearth built, the corner tiled and the stove installed!
We took the year to purchase the chimney pipe off season, get other things needed for the stove corner. One of the things I wanted was a tile with a cool looking compass in it. They were very pricey, so I decided to make one using the tile I already
had, this is the finished product. It will be installed in front of the stove in the floor.

Looks good. In the farmhouse in VA, we heated the whole house with a woodstove for a decade until my military challenges put a stop to cutting all that free firewood laying around the property. We had a hydraulic ram splitter, and the 4x4 farm truck. Two cords would get us thru the winter. Lol. My surgeon ordered me to stop. Knee replacement didn't need to be in the woods cutting firewood.

Once I couldn't cut wood any longer, we had to go with the gas furnace. Lot's less work, but it never kept the house as warm.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.
