I just noticed this tonight looking at both my carbines..the Colt 45 and .44 Mag.
Both listed as 16.5 inch barrel length. Take a look at my pictures and measurements.

First 2 pics are OAL from end of barrels...first pic the .44 Mag carbine. Last pic I had lined up both together even at stock butt.

What do you see and think? So is the .44 Mag a 16.5 inch barrel or is the .45 Colt something less?

Barrel length (per atf) is measured with a dowel inserted in the barrel from muzzle to bolt face. Mark the dowel even with the muzzle. Suggest you measure that way. But I'm thinking you have an X model barrel on the .44 (17.4").

OK just checked with a 3/8ths dia. aluminum rod and the Colt 45 Carbine is 16 9/16 and the .44 Mag Carbine is 17 1/2.
I wonder why Henry made the .44 an inch over specs.?

Was hoping a short mistake made it out the Henry door with my .45!

See my edit, but I think you got a X model barrel on the .44.

Now that would be something ! But the X barrels look to be threaded at the end for silencer which mine is not.

Perhaps a CA Compliant X barrel so they can sell them in CA, etc? No doubt mistakenly ended up on your gun. You might have the only .44BBSC with a 17.4" barrel in existence. Think collector value. You gonna complain?

if a mistake on the short side had been made. Now that would be a collector piece!!

The only other thing I can think of is that Henry might have decided to make all .44 mag carbine barrels 17.4 and just thread the ones for the X. Would save them some money that way. If they did, they haven't updated the website yet.

Could very well be the case on the later run .44's

Kind of interesting. Have to wait for more folks to measure theirs and post.

Interesting... no help here as mine are the longer barreled versions.

Catalog from Henry has x model barrels listed as 17.4 inches for 44 mag,357 mag,45 colt.
Overall length 36.6 inches.
Big boy classic carbine h006.
Barrel length 16.5

Morning all,

Attached are my pictures-44mag carbine, steel, purchased June of '20 in Bozeman MT. If you want the dowel method let me know or other questions.

Thanks for measuring! Yours is like mine but note that the actual end of barrel is about 1 inch past the edge of receiver and should measure 17.5 to the bolt using rod method. Could be Henry measured the .45 Colt version differently?
I'm waiting on a call back from Henry tech to explain it.

Still waiting on a definite reply from Henry. I made a call first time and explained and lady said someone would call back but haven't heard back.
Then I sent an email thru their system explaining what I had and got reply next day. The CS guy Jeff asked if my BBS 44 Carbine was an X model.
I replied no and sent same pictures I posted here. Still no reply from that.

Think this would be a simple thing to check.

I remain interested-but I am willing to bet you knew that.....

I must have stumped them on this simple question. Talked to 3 people now and nobody knows..well no confirming reply.
Called again this morning and got the "somebody will call you ASAP".

I'd bet that you got a X barrel by mistake. If they ask you to return it, will you? If it is, I'd get it threaded and ask them to send you a thread protector.

I bought the rifle in Nov. 2018 and wasn't that before the X models came out? Maybe they don't want to correct all of their spec info on the .44 Carbine? It shoots fine and would not return it. Don't understand why it takes 3 different people so long to answer a simple tech question.
Just measure one on the factory floor. I worked in manufacturing for 40 yrs!

UPDATE.. Just got a call back from Jeff in Tech Support. He is baffled at the length of my .44 Carbine barrel and had sent my email to the Rice Lake plant for further investigation and they are supposed to contact me. I had sent same pictures as seen in this post in the email.
Will be interesting to see what they say as this was before the X model came out.
The thing is when you look at a catalog picture of the .BBS Carbine with round barrel the over hang of the barrel over the mag tube end looks to be the same. I would think that in the blueprints all machining would start at the chamber end of barrel read as Zero end and any extra length would be at the muzzle end which should show up as extra barrel length beyond the front sight and mag tube?
