Spring has sprung. Get out and shoot your Henry
Did I miss something? .44 mag twist rate?
Re: Did I miss something? .44 mag twist rate?
Jim,
That’s some pretty incredible shooting right there. Scope?
I don’t think one could improve on that much, 44 mag is not exactly considered a match cartridge.

kind words appreciated .... scope, most certainly and as noted, I was shooting on a solid rest under conditions that were about as good as they can get .... while I can still hit with open sights, no way I can shoot a group like those without one .... it has an older but still very good Nikon 3X9 power .... I used it for many years on our BLR 308 and it helped put a good number of deer, bear and boar in the cooler .... like I said, there is no doubt in my mind that, in other hands, our Henry can fire a smaller group .... the 50 yard group covers about 6 sq inches, the 100 yard group covers about 9 sq inches

That’s “MOD” (minute of deer) on both yardages.
Below is a pic of my new one, where you can plainly see the brown color on the bottom plate. It certainly looks factory, but I’ve never heard of it before. Of course, that doesn’t mean much...

now that is interesting .... its recoil pad is definitely different than ours ... its definitely a pre loading gate model .... its the only one I recall ever seeing with a brownish bottom plate .... it would be interesting to contact Henry and see what they say about it

The butt pad is a Henry piece, and I think is just an older style they used in the early days of the BBS models. I found an online review of the steel models from Oct of 2015 and they were touting them as “just released to the world”, so I’m sure it’s not older than that. I suppose someone could have put a finish on it, but you can see the steel grain through it, so it’s definitely not cerakote.
I might give Henry a call or email with the serial number and see what they can tell me. The guy I bought it from swears he bought it a year ago and that it was brand new. He seemed to be very honest, so I’ve no reason to doubt him. It might have just been gathering dust in the small town shop for a few years.

Re: Did I miss something? .44 mag twist rate?
Well, I’m not exactly overjoyed with the response. Built 02/17/2015, and the brown finish is definitely not factory. I love being lied to by a seller. I’ll get over it, as functionally, it’s good, and I did want a .44 mag carbine. The couple of visible marks are just character, and it will be a carry in the bush gun, not a wall hanger. At least I found a few boxes of AE 240 grain ammo the other day. It’s a rare thing to find anything but 12 gauge shells these days.

Daggone, that's some good shooting for a lever action rifle. I don't have a scope on my .44 but I may have to consider one for it.JEBar wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 8:38 amours has a blued receiver, the same on all sides .... looking forward to your coming range reports and use impressions .... ours has literally sent tens of thousands of rounds down range and has been back to Henry twice .... should she ever need it, I'll not hesitate to send her back again
//// naaah, it's too cool how it is.
I can hit pop cans at a hundred two out of three. Good enough for a half blind cowboy.
