Magazine Tube Replacement

Post by Firefly » Thu Jun 13, 2019 4:29 am

Simple question folks, is it possible to remove and replace the magazine tube without completely dismantling the gun.
The Henry videos do not show removal of the magazine tube they only show dismantling of the action and I do not want to dive in without some idea of how to simply replace the tube with minimum fuss

Many questions come to mind, but the first is Why are you wanting to replace the one that is attached to the rifle? Is it damaged/non-functional?

In any case, I'd think that this is not a DIY project, but one left to a gunsmith or to the Henry factory. I realize that the latter would amount to a major issue for you, what with getting the rifle to and from HRA from the UK, but I believe it's "major surgery."

The tube on the rifle has cracked in the usual place, where the inner tube locks into place. You are correct that sending the gun to the factory is a non starter, even me buying the tube is a no go as the importer will only deal with gunships, not all of whom actually employ gunsmiths. The result is I have had to find a gunsmith who can do the work, he will order the part, repair the gun then bill me for the part and the work. Fortunately a friend has put me in contact with a member of my shooting club who specialises in lever action work.

Got it. I guess the question is can the friend of a friend who's a member of a shooting club get the importer to source the part and somehow get it to this friend of a friend (or can you)?
If not, then it seems you'll be stuck with going the gunsmith route, which, according to MisterEd, shouldn't be all that difficult a repair (we've been texting about your situation).
If, on the other hand, the friend of a friend is also gunsmith to whom the importer will sell/ship the part, it should be even easier and more economical.
Either way, it's fixable, and the next question becomes one of Henry's policy (or inclination) on treating this as a warranty repair and paying for it all. I have no idea on this point, but it's worth an email (with pictures) to HRA customer service and asking the question. "The world is for the askers," as the saying goes!
Keep us posted, as there are a number of international owners here, some of whom may even know the answer to the warranty question.

If the OP can get the part without having to deal with the 'bureaucracy' it should be a fairly simple replacement.
Punch the pin out of the forward tube support, loosen the screw on the bottom link ahead of the lever on the underside and it should slide right out.
Install will be little more than a reverse of the removal.

Viking Arms the UK importer have given me the details of a local gunship who has an account with them, the club member is a gunsmith who specialises in under lever work so it should be an easy fix.
Thanks to mistered for explaining how to get the tube out I will have a good look at it and may do the work myself, depends on how lazy I feel.
Regarding warranty the gun was made in 2013 and I am not the first owner so that does not really apply.

Henry's lifetime warranty is on the firearm itself. There is no mention of it applying only to the original purchaser. So your rifle should still be considered under warranty.

International rules differ. HRA website refers international customers back to their dealer. Most of the warranty language in "U.S. customer" directed.

I would at a minimum email Henry and ask them about this - I.E. is it something they have to agree with the importer on to be able to export their rifles or is it just an arbitrary rule from the importer.
I suspect most gun manufacturers have little control of their policies with regard to service and warranty once they leave the U.S.

I looked at the Henry site before posting above. There is no wording in the warranty that says the warranty itself is any different for US or international. Where one gets their warranty service is different for international customers.

As Mistered said check that statement out with Henry directly. I had a dealer here once tell me I would have a one year warranty and that was not the case at all.

So did I. It clearly says international customers need to contact their local dealer. And that's all is says. Hard to infer that Henry's USA lifetime warranty is transferable to an international customer.

The Henry site says: "For repairs in all other countries please contact the dealer where the firearm was purchased." There is nothing in that statement to indicate the lifetime warranty isn't honored elsewhere.

Which is what the OP did. He contacted his local (UK) dealer, and was told he had a 2-year warranty. As much as you'd like him to have a Henry lifetime warranty, not gonna happen.

Yea - without the ability to send it back he is at the mercy of his local dealer.
My guess is if he uses his local dealer Henry will probably send them the part N/C and the dealer will charge him to replace it.

Might be right, but sometimes the dealers mis-speak. So still worth a shot to ask Henry directly.

Also Henry.UK website: http://www.henryrifles.co.uk/the-henry-warranty/

"Henry Repeating Arms stands behind its products as it has historically. They offer a simple limited lifetime warranty; if you have a problem at any time, and it’s our fault, we will correct the problem immediately and at no charge. The warranty does not cover excessive wear and tear to parts, and accidental damage."

"All our Henry Rifles carry the superb Henry Rifles simple limited lifetime warranty only available from approved Henry dealers like ourselves – if you buy from an Unauthorised dealer you may have problems if anything goes wrong as they cannot return it for service."

I have spoken with both Henry and the UK importer and discussions are ongoing so at the moment the gun is with my gunsmith who is in conversation with the importer and the importer is in conversation with Henry, I have no idea what the result will be.

On the same topic my gunsmith agrees that the tube is very thin and suggests that laser welding the crack and then fitting a sleeve over the end of the tube reaching the front support may be a better solution than replacement as it would strengthen the area that has cracked on not only my gun but has been reported to have happened to a number of this sites members. He thinks the tube is too weak in this area.

This would be very time consuming and expensive. The tube could be laser welded, finished and a sleeve would have to be machined to fit snugly over the end of the tube as well as the 'J' shaped inner tube lock pin channel would have to be cut to match the existing tube so the inner tube lock pin will seat in it - OR the pin could be ground shorter so it is flush with the outside of the tube and then the outer sleeve could be left uncut.
It would also need to be fitted very carefully and relatively thin as to be as unobtrusive as possible.
The sleeve would then have to be blued to match.

Regardless I would not consider this unless parts were not available which is not the case.
