308 Long Ranger Conversion

I’m a “dyed in the wool” 35 caliber fan. I recently had my SS 357 Henry converted to 357 Max and it is great. I am thinking seriously about the 308 Long Ranger and having it re-bored to 358 Winchester. I can see it with a 1-5x Leupold. Combine that with a 220 cast bullet and it would be almost the perfect deer rifle.

Besides stretching out the chamber, what other modifications were done to the rifle to accommodate the Max? CP.

That was it plus a little work on the throat.

Magazine should work without a problem. Thanks

Won't you have to re-bore and re-rifle the barrel with that kind of diameter increase? If so, is there enough barrel material to allow you to do that safely? I'm obviously way over my head, but it seems like a much more extensive conversion than your 357 Max job.

I have had 3 re-bored by the same guy and he does the measuring to make sure all is well before he starts. All of my re-bores are extremely accurate. They are all 308 to 358 conversions. I just need one in lever action. I use cast bullets in all of them.

Is that JES Rifle Reboring?

When it comes to jobs like this, it's always great to "have a guy", that's for sure! Sounds very interesting, so please keep us posted!

Looks like a good plan but say goodby to H.R.A. if you ever need repair work on the rifle.

I'm pretty sure H.R.A. factory service is not a concern if he decides to go down this route.

I know they will not honor it as warranty work but I believe they would still service or repair it at my expense. I would shoot 2-300 rods of 308 in it before converting to get the bugs out.
