Would anyone with experience handling both of these care to share the differences in weight and handling? I handled a brass version at Walmart and it felt ok. Is the CCH considerably lighter? What about balance? I now it could be subjective as far as how they feel but it would help to answer some questions while I save up the money. Thanks

I have the CCH and no I havent handled the brass model. The biggest reason I havent is while the brass model is nice looking that nice looking goes right out the window after the trigger is pulled on one of those high powered torpedos. That brass butt plate will not be very pretty slamming your shoulder. The CCH has an old man friendly recoil pad on it and is nice to shoot. I also have the All Weather version which I really like for its handling

I'll second what Al is saying. I've shot my share of metal crescent buttplate 45-70 rifles and fun, they are not, to shoot. A serious recoil pad is your friend when shooting a 45-70.

Good points. Do you hunt with your CCH’s or are they strictly for the range?

also agree with Al ... we have a CCH and wouldn't want to fire one without a recoil pad

We have a CCH 45-70 and I can't imagine it being lighter than anything other than an Original Henry rifle - especially when it is fully loaded with four rounds of 45-70... Henry's website lists the weight for both the CCH and the Brass 45-70 at 8.10 lbs. I agree with what the others said about 45-70 recoil and brass buttplates - not so much fun without a good heavy coat on - the CCH with its excellent recoil pad is a joy to shoot.

I carried mine one year for hunting but now carry a bolt gun for the longer ranges here. I still use mine as a range gun and spare.

Ok well, you all just twisted my arm into buying my third Henry. Thanks. Now I just have find one locally. They don’t seem to be as available as the brass ones. Thanks for all the comments. I’ll let know when I get it.

Just a thought here. I did this with my AW since they were hard to get. Email Anthony and tell him you want one but cant find it locally. He will make it happen. He did for me.

Yep, I haven’t shot a 45-70 in a while. I’m itching to touch off that boomer.

For being a 45-70 I didn't feel the recoil was bad at all on my Brass one. In fact it's the same to me in that or in my dad's CC one with the recoil pad. I only shoot the Cowboy Action loads though. I'm sure the hunting loads would hurt a bit. Overall though, I prefer the CC version. It's a prettier gun in my opinion, and if I ever get another one, the CC will be the way I go.

well understood .... HSM Cowboy Action ammo has a mild recoil and is fun to fire in our CCH 45-70 .... HSM Dangerous Game ammo is hugely different .... it delivers a devastating bullet down range at the expense of a much, much stronger kick

I agree with Big Al and JE bar you want a recoil pad with 45/70. I have the cch with scope which will shoot at least a 3 in group @ 300 yards. Even with hot loads I can target shoots good while. With no pain. I’m 64 yes old. Love mine!

Although i have not handled the brass version, I did handle the All Weather and the Steel version. The All Weather was nice, but it did not seem to fit my personality. In the end, I accidentally purchased the Steel version today. I will pick it up on Thursday afternoon. I agree with BigAl52 regarding the recoil pad.

I shot two deer with my CCH 45-70 last year.. I love that rifle!

I have the H010b in 45-70 , worked up some pretty mean loads of 405-460gr hardcast medicine for Coastal brown bears . With a brass butt plate it makes a 338win mag feel like a kids toy lol . I had a bruise from my neck to my elbow , and i had never dredded pulling a trigger so bad on any gun in my life . Something had to give lol .... So i removed the brass butt plate, used epoxy and made a filler spacer for the cowboy cut so it could be removed . Spent around $50 for a limbsaver recoil pad (awesome pad) and made a leather cover for the stock . I can shoot any load that this thing can handle now !!! And it's now a joy to shoot

I was proud of myself though for being able to see through the tears/pain and squeeze out some 1.5 inch groups at 100yrds with iron sights lol

I really like the look of a brass 45-70 but want no part of the recoil .... thanks for posting your mod, I find it to be very interesting

I understand you youngins are havin' trubble with a Crescent Butt Plate. Well I am here to tell you how to shoot a rifle that has one. Not too long ago, I picked up a mfg. 1908 Sportin' Rifle that had a CBP and I took it out and could only fire three rounds. Like to tore up my shoulder. I did some researchin' and found one does not hold the rifle in the normal fashion. It may sound weird, but...when you hold up your rifle to your shoulder, hold your elbow out so it is perpendicular to the ground. Then move the butt of the rifle OUTSIDE of your shoulder towards your bicep and hold it there. The rifle might twist a little or you may have to twist it ever so slightly until you get a good site picture. FIRE AWAY! Hope it works for you. It works for me!
