New Henry 'Boomer'

My dealer called this morning telling me my bullet launcher came in so I hurried on over to pick up a Henry steel 45-70 carbine. It looks very nice with dark straight grained walnut. Fit and finish are very good and the lever cycled very smoothly. This is my 3rd and probably last Henry as the three rifles cover the spectrum pretty much. Found a couple of boxes of 45-70 ammo amazingly enough as I had owned two in the past. After bore cleaning I loaded up 5 rounds and went down behind the house...only wanted to evaluate function. Offhand using the sights without adjustment at about 25 yards banged a steel plate 3x with the other 2 going just low. Function was perfect and recoil seemed about like a 12 gauge...... A Nikon 1-4x Monarch with German #4 reticle in Burris mounts will top her off soon.....Christened her 'Boomer' as she is....and a couple more pics...

A most excellent post . You are very fortunate to be able to test your new rifle in your back yard.

Nothing like a .45-70! Is that a 16.5 inch barrel on that Henry? I have a 1895 Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 with the 18.5 inch barrel and the Hornady 325 gr. rounds kick like a 12. I load my own with 405 gr hard cast and 14 gr. Unique for easy shootin' !

Congrats on your new Henry .45-70, TNman! Nice photo of that
beautiful MO wood, too.
BTW, that's the easiest "What's the best caliber?" ammo chart I've ever read. Finally could figure one

out.
I know you'll enjoy many great range times with your Henry.

Congrats on the new all-purpose, do everything boomer. A really nice rifle, and (to my biased view

), you have the perfect scope ready to fit.

If there's one cartridge that would lure me back into reloading, it would be the 45-70. Love the cartridge, but the price of factory ammo is insane. Might even just go with one of those simple hand loader setups.

Ok, got the scope mounted and squared up...got to the black with three shots at 25 yards and then the next 3 went into one raggedy hole! I intended to move down to 71 and 104 but got a phone call to help my elderly uncle get some firewood before the next big globull warming blast.
I was extremely excited with this group even at 25 yards! Ammo was Remington factory 405g. Boomer is going to be a real shooter like Elmer......

It's looking good so far. That is a nice looking rig with the scope mounted, too.
