Probably not a surprise, but the Henry 45 Colt Brass Carbine (H006CR, for those of you with a scorecard) is now in the stable! In keeping with my “Gun In/Gun Out” policy, one of my 1911s that never saw much action is now enjoying life in a new home. This model is made in Bayonne (or at least this ONE was), like my SGC. My first brass Henry.

Started last night by giving it the total RenWax treatment (vinyl gloves, natch!) and it was pretty much like night and day. Man, that stuff is good, and I can see how the jar will last for years. If it’s good enough for the Queen of England, it’s good enough for us, right? Great tip, thank you!

The wood is plain Jane, but the usual nice, dense walnut (also done right by the RenWax). As is the case with the CCH, I believe HRA does the wood this way (plainer) by design, because the receiver is really the star of the show (at least that’s my story, and I’m sticking with it). Not to say there aren’t brass Henrys with fantastic wood, but I’m good with this approach.

Will work on the mag tube, barrel and innards once I get it downstairs to the bench, as I’m sure it’s full of test fire debris.

Didn’t build this display stand for nothing, so here are a few “before” pics. Stock out of the box for now, but the “after” pics will feature a Skinner Express and Lyman Globe, as well as a lever wrap, all due in within the next few days. No Brass Stacker sling for now, as it will very likely NOT be seeing any time in the woods, and slings tend to kind of get in my way at the range. This carbine length is nicely balanced anyway, so, as hefty and business-like as it is, it’s no beast of burden. Just 7.76 lbs of wood, brass and steel!

Now to load up some Missouri Bullets (250 gr) and put some of them through that barrel at a respectable velocity. Have everything I need to start reloading that round this weekend. That bore opening seems HUGE. “After” pics and Range Report(s) to come!

That, fine sir, is magnificent! I have seen Ren Wax mentioned in a few posts...looks like I need to find some.

Others may chime in about RenWax's availability at retail, but I didn't have much luck finding it, and Amazon's pricing was better than even WalMart's online price, by a long shot:

That is definitely a BBBB, Evan!! Yup, the first "B" stands for beautiful. And that Renaissance is truly a renaissance in how it makes a Henry shine. Agree with you 100% on the wood stock -- it is very beautiful and takes the wax excellently also. Congrats on your first brass model, and especially so having a .45LC rifle. You're gonna love it!

Glad to see you got yourself a gorgeous Henry in brass! Brass octagon gets heavy after a while just packing it around even not in the woods. So maybe rethink the sling. The slings can be detached pretty quickly, so as not to be in the way at the range.

Haven't ruled out the sling, as it's a beautiful accessory and much nicer than anything else I've been able to find on the interweb, that's for sure. But, for now, I picked up a nice padded case to get us in and out of the range. We'll see, and THANKS for the kind words about the new addition!

Stupid question. Do you put the ren wax all over? Barrel, receiver, stock?

Hey, I'm the king of stupid questions, just ask around!

And, Yep, it's really good on everything, but especially the receiver and the stocks. One clean, 100% cotton (no microfiber, just cut up a 100% cotton old t-shirt) rag to swirl it on and another to buff it off. I did the receiver first, then the stock. You can't avoid overlapping between the wood and the metal surfaces, so a second go-round on the receiver can't hurt.

Then I just took the "buffer" rag, that had just a bit of wax on it, and wiped down the barrel and lever. Mags noted in a post (I think) that too much wax on the barrel just serves to show fingerprints badly on the super shiny surface, but a little bit worked out fine for me. A little bit of gun oil for an exterior barrel wipe is great, too.

Does anybody else think that RenWax smells like mothballs?

Too much captures fingerprints on any shiny surface. Not so much the stock and forearm as the wood finish is usually matte to begin width. My choice to not use it on blued metal is a personal one. I like oil on blue. If you like Ren Wax all over do it. You can use Ren Wax on other stuff too. It's not a gun specific product. I recently used it to lube the rails on the drawers in my tool box.

I hadn't stuck my nose in the jar, initially wasn't aware it had an odor. I just tried it. To me, faint odor of turpentine.

Have the Skinner Express mounted and the Lyman front globe (along with the dovetail filler from the buckhorn), but still don't have the lever wrap, so pics will come later.

Finally got this down to the garage workshop this morning, where it was not quite "meat locker" cold, but close. Could't see my breath, so I fired up the coil-dish and carried on. Barrel was pretty dirty, but the mag tube was very clean, so that was quick work.

However, the bolt looked "off," so I took it apart and was glad I did. That bolt was bone dry, so out it came for a good cleaning and a little light greasing. The upper part of the lever was dirty, too, but things that go bang due to gunpowder tend to get that way. Just a note for some of you all picking up new Henrys: go the extra mile out of the box and take the bolt out for some TLC.

Oh wee, that is nice Evan! You're gonna be busy with all these handloads to try. Kinda like me! Need any info on the .45 loads, ask away. Nice rifle.
