Any of y'all own/shoot the Henry H010 45-70? I was shooting a friend's Marlin 45-70 guide gun a few weeks ago and I really liked it. The short, handy, compact powerhouse characteristics really impressed me. And it was still shootable without punishing recoil. I'm thinking I need the Henry version....for what--->I don't know but that has never interfered before. And the old classic cartridges really appeal to me.

There are quite few Henry 45-70 owners/fans here. I'm not one of them, but you'll hear plenty, I'm guessing.

our Henry 45-70 is one of our favorites .... can be loaded with a wide range of ammo .... all the way from trapdoor and cowboy action loads to ones designed for use in taking dangerous game .... right now I'm in the process of working up a fun to fire load for range use at 100 or more yards .... in test firing yesterday, I believe we are very close to finding a load that will excel

I do not YET own a Henry 45-70 but own a few Marlins and a ruger #1 in that caliber. It is my favorite caliber, can go from mild to wild. Stay with 400 gr bullets and it is a joy to shoot. I routinely hunt deer and bear with this caliber and it makes the tracking job easy if you need it. Most are DRT.

With the quality of my recent BBB 44 mag from Henry and the stellar customer service I am sure my next Henry will be a 45-70. Now to decide if it is the brass or the case colored? or maybe the single shot man the choices. it might take me a while to figger which one.

I sure like my Henry single shot 45-70. In its limited use so far, it's proven to be accurate, and effective on the one deer it's been used to take. One nice thing about the single shot is that it's pretty light, mine weighs 7 lbs 12 oz., fitted with a Leupold 2.5X Ultralight scope,making it a nice rifle to carry. Recoil seems to be not much at all, with the Hornady 250 grain Monoflex loads I used.

if you are loading your ammo, what powder and how heavy of a charge are you using to load the 250's

I have the Henry .45-70 in the steel version with the recoil pad. I have enjoyed shooting mine. I have only shot one box of factory ammo thru mine. I hand load and have made some loads that will rattle your eye teeth but my normal shooting load is an upper level trap door load. I usually shoot 405 grain lead bullets and they will make a steel plate sing. I also worked on a load with 350 grain JSP bullets that have same 50yd. POI at my 405 grain load. Almost 100% of my shots would be less than 60 yds. I have made a few shots on steel plates out to 125 yds. at my son's range. That is definitely my range limit with iron sights.

kudos on ringing a gong at that distance with open sights .... your decision to practice with trapdoor loads makes perfect sense to me

I'm using the 250 grain Monoflex factory loads from Hornady. They're a bit faster than standard 300 grain lead loads, but I do believe there's less felt recoil; also, since they are pointed, they shoot a little flatter as well. As I've said in the past, I may not be the best guy to listen to on felt recoil, since I've shot so many 3" duck loads out of fairly light 12 gauge guns (7 lbs Franchi Intensity, for one), I may be too recoil addled to really know .

I love my Brass one, but my dad's case colored one is even nicer. Both shoot the same, can't go wrong with either one. However the case colored ones are hard to find right now readily available. Back ordered everywhere it seems.

I will be adding a Henry 45-70 18" to my collection in 2019.Keep your eyes open it's coming!

The brass .45-70 levergun I have isn't really needed, since I've used a Marlin Guide Gun in the caliber as an ATV gun for several years.
But.....it was too nice.
Thinking about chopping the barrel back a bit.
