The other day I took my H009 to the range. I took a couple of shots at the 100 yard steel gongs, and nailed them both dead center. I invited the range officers and a buddy who was next to me to try it, and all three of them nailed a gong on their first shots. One even did it offhand, standing.

If we had been deer hunting, we would have had a pile of DRT bucks. I realize that for centerfire rifles 100 yards is child's play. Still, east of the Mississippi most hunting is at distances of more like 35-50 yards. I don't currently do any hunting, but if I ever do, I suspect the H009 will be there with me. Those XS ghost ring sights are amazing. It's too bad the current H009's no longer come with them.

I've discovers that my Henry seems to like Federal 180 grain ammo the best, and that's what we were using.

Here most deer hunting is under 100 yards but my friend in Montana takes shots up to five times that. The big different is we are in forest and Montana has grasslands.

consistently hitting the metal at 100 yards with a lever action 30-30 speaks really well for Henry .... our vintage Model 94 does well to consistently hit a basketball size target at that range

I have a vintage 94 made in the teens (if I remember right) and it doesn't stack up against my Henrys for the fun factor.

I'm going to shoot some Federal American Eagle JSP's for the first time today. We'll see how the 45 Colt likes 'em. Ringin' the gong at 100 yds is pretty good shooting.

Yes, it is. It's just the right amount of challenging to make it fun. The range only goes out to 100. Most guys with rifles have them scoped, and hitting the steel with those guns is boring.

Great shooting! Sounds like a lot of fun with a beautiful, accurate rifle! And most of my shots at deer here in Pa. have been at about 50 yards and under throughout the years.

Darn. If I missed a deer at 50 yards with my Henry wouldn't be able to blame my rifle. I'd need to come up with a different excuse.

It's a good omen when you nail your first shots with a new rifle.
