Can anyone tell me how effective the Limbsaver slip on butt pad is with the 45-70.
I have a Henry H010 that I have hunted with the last couple of years and love. I handload for it pretty much exclusively.
I had shoulder surgery at the end of March for a torn bicep. I haven't shot it since but, I have been cleared by my Dr. to resume my activities. He told me I would probably have to build back to my previous activities. I just ordered Skinner sights for my rifle and picked up one of the Limbsavers for it. Should I remove the factory pad or just add the Limbsaver over it. Also how much will this actually reduce the recoil. Any actual experience would be greatly appreciated.

I intend to start back with very light loads and work my way back up. My hunting load has been 405grain hollow base hard cast bullets at about 1600fps. I plan on starting back with a small charge of Unique to drop the velocity to around 800fps as a starting point.

Welcome to the forum, isme - sounds like you have good plan with your H010. We've got limbsavers on a 45-70 H&R Buffalo Classic and a New England Firearms 12 Ga Single-shot shotgun. Both guns are relatively light and can kick hard with typical factory loads. The limbsavers really make a difference in the felt recoil - makes shooting these guns much more enjoyable. I would put the limbsaver right over the factory pad on your H010 and see if the length of pull still works for you...

I never really had a problem shooting it prior to the surgery and now I'm anxious to get back to shooting before hunting season. I've got until Nov. but I also realize how far I've got to go.

I put a slip-on limb saver on my Marlin 45-70. It very effective .
I can shoot all day, 80+ rounds, using 300gr and 405gr at Trapdoor pressures.

Can’t help you with the pad question as I run the factory pad on my old Marlin.45-70. Wanted to say hi, have enjoyed your comments on BCUSA. (PaPa K there).

The Limb Saver worked beautifully!!!
I didn't fire a bunch of rounds but considering I'm still recovering from shoulder surgery, I would rather work my way back a little at a time.

Absolutely no pain or bruising. I actually decided to go with my hunting round for the first round. 405 grain hard cast bullet at about 1600 fps.
I had my SIL with me in case I couldn't do it he could check out the sights for me.
The Skinner sights were amazing also.

I know, I only put a few rounds on paper before switching to reactive targets.

It may sound crazy but this is my Grail gun.
I guess this is why I got so excited that I was still able to shoot it, and that the accuracy had improved so much with just a sight change.

I had some concerns that I might not be able to shoot it anymore after the work I had done.

Now, It's all Good!!!

That Skinner sight looks like it belongs there. Like it came from the Henry factory that way.

The Limb Saver looks cushy. I think I'm going to need one. After 60 rounds at my last trip (first trip for my Henry) to the range I had a knot and light bruise on my shoulder. Obviously there is no cushioning from the brass butt plate of the H009B.

I did notice that the combination of recoil pads, although effective, did lengthen my trigger pull. It was almost a stretch to work the action. I could do it but, it was at the limit of my reach.
If I decide to stay with the Limbsaver ( more than likely) I will probably switch to the permanent one and fit it to the stock. That will reduce the length of pull back to pretty close to original.
