Finally got a chance to go shoot my Long Ranger (308) for first time. Time snuck up on me and deer season opens here in Calif. In a couple days. Probably won't get out myself but as a taxidermist my " busy season" starts and the opportunity to shoot it begins to dwindle. Didn't exactly get to "tweak it in" today but was able to get it on paper and reasonably close enough to fine tune it later. Will have to use the old Savage 99 until then. Here is what I concluded from today's little romp. The recoil is a lot less than I thought it would be. Gun is a lot of fun to shoot. Don't baby the action when using it. Be assertive with it. I was shooting off a bench rest and the tendency to "Go soft " happens. when you do that the empty will hang up. I shot a few rounds of 150 grain PSP Lead to get it on paper, Then switched to 150 Grain Barnes Vortex non toxic to get it close to where I needed it. Surprisingly there wasn't much difference between the two. From what I can tell from this short shooting session this gun and I are going to get along just fine for a long time

Hey thanks for posting your 1st go with the Long Ranger. I was looking at one of these and really liked how it felt.
What sorta group did you get, 1" or less at least?

I can't wait to get one but they are still in short supply.

If you're looking for a Long Ranger in 223 w/o iron sights they're all over the place - Bud's has them and Davidson's lists 34 of them in stock on their online store. I usually don't like to buy a gun without checking it out in person, but with Henry I make an exception - their QC is good and customer service is the best in the business which means low risk of getting a Henry lemon, and if you do then they will make it right (I know I'm trying to give advice to the expert here). I've ordered 3 henrys online and gotten three great Henrys with zero issues. You may want to consider buying a Long Ranger online...

As far as what shells I use in the savage the answer is regular lead bullets. It is a .243 so I will just use those up until we have to go "lead free" here in Calif, in '17. The Long Ranger is my first 308 so I decided just start out with the lead free in this gun. I borrowed a few lead bullets just to get it on paper. As far as the moa goes the shooting 'event' was a last minute opportunity at a friends ranch with a somewhat shaky bench rest, a 4:00 PM breeze from the Pacific Ocean and a small herd of cows that had to be convinced to move somewhere else for a while. With all this in play I just wanted to 'get close ', shoot the new gun for the first time and worry about serious sighting in 'next time". With all those factors considered I wasn't disappointed at the results but I would say I was around a 1.75 MOA.

Oops I goofed about having to go lead free in 17. Correct answer is 2019.

I have seen them in stores but at high prices. My LGS beats anybody and everybody in prices. But the downside is he can't get them unless the market is overstocked.

Nothing wrong with that group, There are more factors involved when squeezing the trigger on what ever animal you're after.
