8 rounds not 7 in .357 carbine

Post by Richd » Thu Apr 11, 2024 10:41 am

I’m pleasantly surprised that I can load 8 .357 rounds in my Henry carbine. The spec says 7. I tried.38s too but it stays at 8.
Thought I’d mention it. This includes 180 gr HC buffalo bore.357 and
also 125 gr HST Remington. I’m wondering if they spec 7
for 200gr loads? I don’t have any to try.

Plus 1 chambered for 9 on board. Same as for other calibers, such as my .41 mag. Been that way for a long time. I've never seen an explanation from Henry for this, but nobody is complaining. :D

Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes is rapidly becoming a reality (11/2023). Para Bellum.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere the higher mag tube spring tension from the 8th round had the potential for causing jam/feeding issues in the receiver.

I Had a mild hiccup with my .357 carbine when I loaded 8 in the tube. I tried it again after that and wasn't able to duplicate the hang up so not sure if I was a little bit lazy on the lever or what. I'll probably stick with 7.

The other day I loaded 11 in my .327 Fed Mag (capacity 10) and in the middle of the string I had a hiccup. I was shooting from a bench on bags which makes cycling a lever difficult. I’m sure I babied the lever and had I been in a standing position I’m sure I would not have had a problem.

I’ve had hiccups too, but before I started loading 8. It doesn’t like underwood 120 gr penetrators or totally flush wad cutters. It will
feed underwood wads mist of the time surprisingly.
The hiccups other than that were me not being deliberate it racking lever. I’ll try again tomorrow and see.

Update, loaded 8 plus one in chamber no hiccups. I did have hiccups with loading only a few while chronographing though. The lever needs to be solidly operated. It seems like the last round sometimes gets hung up if you aren’t deliberate in working the lever.
Anyway, 8 rounds didn’t seem to be a problem in itself.
