First off hello and I’m glad to be here.

Just picked up a little over a week ago a Henry 45-70
A couple of things I’ve noticed:

It needed a break in period rough compared to my Golden Boy and my JM Marked Marlin 30-30

It’s also does not like Acme 300 grain coated bullets. They cannot cycle smoothly.

After a week of cycling and running my own 405 grain cast bullets it has totally become way smoother.

Finally it is the most accurate Lever Action I have ever owned.

Has anyone else has issues with certain bullets not wanting to feed. My other 45-70 is an original trapdoor which will eat any safe load

I have owned 2 45-70's by Henry. But neither was a sidegate model. I never have used any of Acme's coated bullets. But the two I owned would cycle any of the lead cast of jacketed bullets I fed them without any issues.

our Henry CCH 45-70 has proven to be one heck of a shooter .... we've run a pretty wide range range of bullets through it and so far no cycling issues .... its favorite load seems to be our hand loads using Nosler 300 gr Ballistic Silvertips .... we've modified it by adding a top quality, aftermarket recoil pad, Mag-Nu-Porting, and mercury recoil suppressor, it recoil is no joke .... with Cowboy action level loads its run to fire

Yea I actually plan on only using trapdoor level loads. For a couple of reasons.

Even though it’s easy to keep separate I don’t want the chance of a higher level round slipping into the trapdoor. It’s an amazing rifle and it was made in 1888.

Also in Florida a 405 grain lead slug moving at 1440 fps will kills everything I can hunt in the state and kill five more things behind it.

Also it is fun to shoot 45-70 out midrange it’s like throwing a ball from deep right field into the catchers mitt.

Those 405 gr trap door level loads will also stop anything we have here in Wisconsin. Much easier on my shoulder in the Ruger No. 3, too.
