Just for the discussion, I'll offer some things I learned with compensators on handguns. And I'm posting because there is a lot of "grey area" between the definitions of a compensator and a muzzle brake.
I had a .45 built up for Bullseye, and bowling pins, and steel plates, and basically general purpose target shooting. I wanted a compensator because that seemed to be the hot new thing at the time. The guy building it for me said he wanted to know what I'd be doing most, and he'd set the comp up for that. His reason was that bullseye uses much lighter loads than you'd use for pins, and that meant that the comp would have a lot less gas to work with. I'll admit that I never thought of it in that context. He said that the .38 Super comps worked best because those were much higher pressure loads, and much more gas to work with. I'm thinking that a .45-70 may follow that same path as the lighter bullseye loads, especially with it being a former black power cartridge and not generating as much pressure.
So if you want a brake for the uniquness of having one, all well and good, but if you are looking for recoil reduction, and possibly reduction of muzzle rise, then having something designed to work with 45-70 class cartridges is worth looking into. They're not all created equal.

As for magnaport, the shotgun porting works amazingly well. A buddy had a .375JDJ Contender with porting and that didn't kick anywhere near what I though it would, but I don't have all that much experience with it beyond that.
Makes sense. Thanks!
Recoil reduction is indeed the reason I wanted a brake. My first trip to the range was a bit of an eye-opener. I started with Winchester factory loads, which weren't too bad. The Hornady Leverevolution 325 gr. loads I tried next were a bit stiff. Stiff as in bruised shoulder and a bit of skin off my nose from the scope after a dozen rounds or so shooting off a benchrest. Also, the neoprene cheek riser stayed put about three rounds before sliding forward. I got the scope moved forward a little yesterday and added a riser from Accu-Riser, which should stay in place better. As for the muzzle brake I just went with the one Henry sells. Hopefully it'll do a little good at least.

Looks like a nice brake. Definitely designed to allow full access and function of the mag tube, so that's good. Those ports should strip off some gas and reduce the push back into your shoulder a bit. You and your shoulder will be the judge for that, and I hope that it does all that you want it too. Another little side bennie is that people often shoot a bit better with a brake, hope that you find that as a result as well.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately it looks like it'll be a few weeks before I can make it back to the range with the X. I'll post results then.

Here's what I did on mine:

That is one hell of a brake! Does it interfere with removal of the magazine tube at all?
Those giant ports must strip a lot of gas, I'll bet it is loud as hell but doesn't push back very much.
Nicely Done!

Yes, it did ever-so-slightly. My gunsmith was able to remove just enough from the knurled end to allow it to unscrew.

It is AMAZING how much it knocks the recoil down!
