carriage assembly difference of two Henrys........

Post by fortyshooter » Sat May 13, 2023 1:43 pm

So my Henry 45 X Model will chamber a 45 colt round that is 1.650 COL but the older 16 inch Carbine I have will not.

Took a look at the case stop on the carriage assembly of both to compare any difference. As you can see the X Model case stop is further back in relation to the bolt face than the Henry front loader carbine. Maybe remove the part and machine it back just a bit to cycle the longer rounds you think?

I'm not a gunsmith so.....I wouldn't. You could probably handle the task well though with your knowledge.

Got it done and it now chambers those big 45 Colt rounds! The Henry is easy to take apart and go back together....my first time.
Set up the carrier part in the mill getting the slight factory angle zeroed in and trimmed it back .080....just a good guess.

Put it back together and it cycles as well as the Henry X 45 !

Slid a primed empty case in the chamber to check for firing and it went BANG. Amazing how much fire makes it out the end of a 16 inch barrel with just a primer!

I envy your knowledge, your facilities, and most of all your confidence to correct this yourself.
Good job!

Good job. As long as no other issues show up, you hit the nail on the head.

Will you need to move the "free bore" forward to accommodate the longer cartridge ? ? ?

Nope did not have to do that. Just needed to give the round a bit more clearance to get into place on the lifter. Works great just like the newer X model 45 Colt I have.
