44 BBS Accuracy

Post by Oksrt » Mon Mar 13, 2023 10:43 am

What kind of accuracy should one expect from a 44mag bbs? My shooting buddy has one and i not happy with the accuracy at 50 yds. He is doing good to get 2.5” at 50. We both have 41 mag bbs that will do that at 100. Is it just the caliber? He has changed scopes with no change.
Thanks

How old is his rifle? Older barrels have a fast twist that won’t stabilize bullets heavier than 240 grain, a few years ago Henry went to the industry standard twist rate. Has he tried different ammo? How does the crown look? The rifling? Is the barrel clean?

Need more info please. 5 MOA accuracy is pretty bad…

I have an older BBB in 44 mag, I can get one ragged hole at 40 yds. with one of my handloads.
The mag tube was ripping off and I sent it back to Henry.
When they replaced it they also changed the barrel also.
Sadly, I haven't played with it much since then.

our Henry BBS 44 Mag is capable of firing much tighter groups than I am .... both of the targets shown below were fired back in 2018 using our hand loads .... they were fired in as close to perfect conditions as possible around here from a bench rest .... the first was 50 rounds fired at 50 yards .... the second was 100 rounds at 100 yards .... our rifle has a 3X9 Nikon

Tagging in, wondering what to expect from a new BBS 44. What factory loads and/ or hand load recipes have you found to be the best in your’s?

I've found mine to be very accurate for a lever action rifle.

Mine was manufactured in 2019 with the 1 in 20 twist.

I'm using a Leupold FX-II scout scope fixed magnification on a modified Marlin 1894 XS Lever rail (They didn't make a Henry one at the time I set mine up).

I've zeroed mine in at 100 yards using factory Hornady 9085, 240 gr XTP. (I've found in my experience to be the most consistent factory ammo)

Definitely recommend zeroing using specific ammunition. I think the BBS 44 Magnum 20" is every bit as accurate as my middling skills can muster.

Here is a recent 10 round group at just over 75 yards from resting elbow.....

That’s some very nice shooting. Did you do that with open sights, or were optics used?

New rifle, couple months old. Shoots same with factory or reloads. Will check the crown.
