Good factory ammo choices for 45/70 All-Weather?

Post by Cannonball » Thu Feb 09, 2023 4:05 pm

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and finally found a Henry All-Weather 45/70 after searching for almost a year. This is my first Henry rifle and I would like some advice on some good factory ammo to try. The main purpose will be for deer hunting here in East Tennessee. Most shots will be 100 yards or less and I know it’s not advisable to shoot much further than that. I was hoping for some suggestions to try since ammo is hard to find and expensive when you do find it. I’m looking for accuracy first so something that groups well in my rifle. I don’t mind buying 3-4 different loads to try if needed. Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome form Iowa!
For factory loads, I have found my H010 likes Hornady LEVERevolution 325 gr FTX. I placed a Leupold VX3i 2.5 x 8 x 36 scope, I attached my sight in target with the results with this cartridge. As you mentioned, try a few different loads, if you can find them available, and see what your All Weather likes and enjoy your new rifle! :D

Federal Fusion works best IMO.

Another vote for the Hornady Lever ammo. I also heard but never tried it in mine that the old Remington 405 gr bullet load was good. I had an AW but sold it.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

The Hornady 325 FTX is good stuff. Have used it in my Marlin 1895 GS and it shoots very well.

Thanks everyone. I ordered a couple boxes of the Hornady to try out. I have used it before in .35 Remington and .450 Marlin and it did well in those rifles so I am expecting good results.
