45 Colt feeding problem
45 Colt feeding problem
Took my 45 out yesterday for a bit of shooting, and found that some HSM bear load’s won’t feed smoothly. All other rounds that I have shot through the rifle have fed smooth as butter, but the HSMs take some fiddling around to chamber. Too bad, because they really pack a wallop. Their millimeter or so of extra length is obviously the problem, but I wonder if Henry would have a solution? Really great rounds, just takes some jiggling to get them in the chamber. Don’t think an angry bear would wait while I was getting a round ready to shoot.

I haven't seen any problems feeding HSM 200gr RNFP. These are cowboy loads. Not the Bear Loads.

I've not had issue with Matts 325 or cast performance 325's when loaded to book COAL.
Are these the HSM loads you are talking about.

my 315's and 325's are 1.65

I have a kinda similar issue with Corbon 300gr JSP's I have. They measure at 1.652. For the most part they do feed although they do have to be loaded through the side gate or by pulling the rod out of the mag tube.

Re: 45 Colt feeding problem
I have two cf Henrys, and have loaded longer than normal cartridges in both and didn't have any problems.
In the 41 I have some heavy 270 gr cast wfn loaded to around 1.70, and they cycle just fine.
In the older 44 BBB I've loaded some 300 cast, don't remember the oal, and I'm not near my notes.
They also cycled fairly well.
Loading them through the tube was a breeze, and believe you could load longer cartridges than would cycle through the action.

Re: 45 Colt feeding problem
You should be able to rock in rounds longer than the 1.65. Put the nose in the feeding tube, slide them up, until the rim fits in the slot. Drop it in, load the next. For some reason i think we've had this discussion before.

Re: 45 Colt feeding problem
I have had an issue with making 30-30 too long, sorry I don't have my notes with me. Went. back to whatever my book said and they run great.
Same with my 357 mags. I tried to guess longer without a gauge and found the limits the same way I found it with 30-30.
Honestly, I reset the press and ran them through to the right length. Turns out that size does matter.
