X model 45 vs. BBS 45 Colt non side gate differences....

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Sep 25, 2022 4:22 pm

I needed to clean my X Model 45 Colt and thought why not lay both out and see what the internal differences might be between the side gate
and the older tube feeder. All I did was pull the levers and bolts and could see that the shell lifters a just a bit different. Have no idea what the 2 large
dimples are for on the X model lever as there is no ball detent I could see inside the receiver and no wear in that area around the dimples.
Maybe just a way to locate the lever during machining?
Didn't see much difference in wall thickness of the receiver itself from what part I could see and both bolts looked identical. A full teardown might reveal more but just wanted to
do a quick compare while cleaning both.

I had my big boy x 45 colt apart the other day after my range day. I was bringing the rifle inside when i noticed this on my hammer.

I gave it a bit of a feel, and it was a gritty mess. To say the least, I was pretty ticked off to find rust. I took the rifle down, and here is the rest.

I run my rifles wet, i keep them wiped down, I am very careful with how much moisture they are introduced to.

It's not rust.

Nope, Henry used a bleepity bleepity blankity flarken red grease. When shot with couple hundred lead loads, it turns rust brown and feels gritty.

Having to pull the rifle needlessly apart to deal with a rust problem that isn't rust but crap planning by an engineer or procurement department. Sigh. I got it back together and let my blood pressure calm down.

Is that the trigger spring with all the red grease? Haven't taken mine completely apart yet.

That grease made me panic as well. I’ve got some safe queens so the look of rust started a panic but once it was clean all was well in happy safe land.

I LOVE the wood kit! How hard was the forward grip?

45 colt went on mine in a breeze, the 357 mag was a pain.
