Pumpkin Shootin'

I been holdin' onto three large pumpkins since Last Halloween. I finally got the chance to go out to the desert with my Henry H009CC .30-.30 to shoot 'em after I cut the tops off and filled em' with water, though two of them leaked out. I still have a semi-buckhorn rear site on it and though I am not crazy about it, it worked well enough. Shootin' at 25 yds (75') according to my Leopold rangefinder, my first four shots at a pumpkin just went right through, however on the fifth shot, I aimed a little lower where I was hopin' there was still some water left in it. Sure enuff' the pumpkin exploded. Very cool! I then aimed at a wooden bowlin' pin I took along and the head came off at the neck. I am not braggin' because I know the rifle was shootin' straighter than I ever could, shootin' freehand. The next shot hit the pin in the body and it shattered into pieces. While the rifle holds six in the magazine, I was only loadin' five at a time. My next shots were at the next two pumpkins and were accurate enough to shatter the pumpkins. The third pumpkin exploded the best as it was full of water. Once again, I have to state that the accuracy of my rifle was outstanding! After shootin' 36 rounds through my rifle, I picked up my shells and several others in a bucket i took along for just such a purpose. I had a great day, but I am going to get a butt cover for my rifle as my shoulder is a little sore. I am old so, that is why it still hurts. I hope you all get a chance to get out on a beautiful sun shiny day and do some good shootin'!

I like shooting those small 4 inch pumpkins with the .44 Mag Henry carbine. A hot 180 gr. XTP load makes them disappear.

I love going out to the desert to shoot. This weather keeps up, will be heading out early next week. 30-30 sounds good along with a .45 Colt or two.

Great that you got out to shoot some. I plan to head out to the range tomorrow. Then need to smell burnt powder never diminishes. So you just got to go feed that addiction.

Watermelons/cabbage and pumpkins make great targets.......So do gallon jugs filled with water.
