I've always pronounced Carbine, like bean. Walther like it's spelled. The Vaulter or Walter options are usually more European influences, (read German). A lot of words are like that. Like the brits Al-Loo-Min-e-um vs. ah loo min um. I get a kick out of it actually, and sometimes use of odd (for U.S.) pronunciation for any number of words (Aw Dee vs Ow Dee) just for the reaction it gets. ;)

I read in one of my gun publications that the " proper " pronunciation is "byne" I have, however said it both ways.

According to the dictionary, both pronunciations are correct. Not surprising, since the word "carbine" is not an original word. It's a word derived from earlier words and the origin is a bit uncertain. First meaning as we know it was a short rifle carried by horsemen.

On that note I guess the gun barrel length determines if it's a carbine or not?

Understand. I call them carbines. Beans. Don’t really care about other pronunciation. Of course, I’m an old redneck. Lol
