Help me out, would you please?

Post by Redthies » Wed Sep 01, 2021 10:11 am

As a PNW based hunter, I spend 90% of my days in very tight woods, with a sprinkling of logging slashes here and there. I’ve been waiting for years for Henry to build a carbine length.30-30 or .45-70 to carry. It would be the easiest thing in the world for them to offer a carbine or trapper length barrel in these calibers, yet they still don’t have one. The BBS carbine I have in .44 Mag is great, but I won’t shoot it past 100 yards as it’s just not enough to reliably and humanely take animals with pistol calibers past that distance. The .30-30 is the perfect deer caliber for what I and a lot of others do.

If you could take 5 minutes and go to Henry’s “suggestion box” and ask for a carbine length .30-30 I’d be very appreciative. Apparently my pleading has not added up to enough weight to get it done...

How much shorter is carbine? My 45-70 is pretty short at 18 1/2"
I did wonder how much it would cost to shorten the barrel and magazine tube. Betcha it can be done. I'm sure it's $$$$

My Marlin is 18”, and I’d even go to a 16.5”. Henry does not offer the .30-30 shorter than 20” that I have found. If you know something I don’t, I’d be all ears.

KMB- Which .45-70 do you have? I’m no longer shooting that caliber, but Henry seems to lump the .30-30 and .45-70s together so perhaps I missed an 18” .30-30?

I shortened a .22WMR barrel to 12” and put it on a Mares Leg. At the time Henry did not make one in WMR. Now they do but it’s a round barrel and mine is octagon. My point is it can be done and was not all that expensive. Well maybe it was because I had to buy a donor rifle and then send it to Henry to be debarred. Henry was not happy with me and did not want to do it. Prior to doing this I asked them if they could rebarrel a rifle for me and they said yes.

So I showed them the email and they did it. Yes I had to pay for it but I bet I have the only octagon barreled Mares Leg.

I suppose that is one option. My friend is a gun store owner and a decent smith. I’ve had him shorten the barrel on a couple of bolt guns before, but I think he can only legally go to 18.5”. If I get a steel rather than an AW, it will at least be a possibility to re-blue the crown, but I’d prefer a 18” or 16.5” AW if they would build one. Chiappa, Marlin, Winchester etc have all done Trapper models with 16.5” barrels. You’d think Henry would donit as well given the number of redundant models they already have?

I agree in the 16.5" barrel length for the 30-30. If you look at the ballistics for that barrel length with standard 30-30 loads, not much difference with an 18" barrel.

I never thought about that.

It's the standard steel side gate. Nothing fancy but the barrel is nice n short.
It's shorter than the X model which I find weird.
If anything should have gotten stubby it should have been the X since it's threaded for a can.

I did a bunch of research on barrel length for .30-30 and from 16.5 to 18 and 18 to 20,on average you lose 100 or so FPS per size change. So from 20 to 16.5 you’re losing 200 +/-. I can live with that to keep from hooking it on trees while slung on my shoulder. I hunt some GNARLY stuff... It’s not ALL like this, but a LOT of it is.

That’s my BBSC in .357 in the first pic. 16.5” would be way nicer than 18” in this stuff!
