Random light primer strikes with my 357 Henry rifle?

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Apr 04, 2021 9:02 pm

While at the range today I had 3 light strikes with my .357 Henry rifle while shooting my .38 Special loads. There was only one in each magazine load that didn't go off and the strike was very light. Something random going on with the firing pin you think?

Hmm. Can't imagine it's the shorter .38 cases, its still locked up in the chamber. Possibly a bit of dust or dirt around the firing pin? I'm guessing with you forty.

I've had that happen with my 45/70. Lever was not fully closed. Just a hair will do it.

I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.

Was that factory ammo or some reloads? When you load your own , the primers should be seated fully actually slightly recessed. I always run my finger over the end of the case.

if it is scoped and you have a hammer extender, check for scope interference. Had this issue with a 44mag until I noticed a wear mark on scope underside. It does not take much to slow down the hammer.

Primers are well seated below surface. I need to give it a cleaning so will inspect the bolt/firing pin area. Might have been a lever close issue.
First time that I had the issue since I have had it.

Had the same problem with my .327. Started off as an occasional light strike and got progressively worse to the point that about only 1 in 5 would fire. I had to send it back to Henry. I've only shot it once or twice since getting it back. (It's been back 3 times) It's my only Henry but I might as well since I don't shoot it. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Will keep an eye on that issue and hope it doesn't have to go back. What did they replace on it Jake?
