hm, yes that I know. how does one adjust it?

.I had emailed Jeff this morning. He looked up the repair notes.
"Replaced magazine and adjusted lock up." I know what lock up is, but it's a mystery how one adjusts it.

as is the case with a Browning BLR, a gear driven system is used to operate a Long Ranger's bolt .... if gears don't mesh correctly, the action will be off .... with that being the case, properly locking all of the various components into place when the lever is worked one way or the other could be jeopardized

my best guess is they took it apart and put it back together with all the gears lined up as they are supposed to be .... if you take a BLR to a good, independent gunsmith and ask him to take it apart and clean it .... most won't touch it .... rather they will tell you that you need to take it to a Browning certified facility

If it works as nice as my .308 LR when I got it back from HRA service, you will be a very happy camper. Kinda sucks that this happens, but it definatly does not suck how great Henry customer service is.

They replaced spur gear, bolt assembly, magazine, and buttstock. Buttstock was for some flaws on the wood. My rifle would jam when cycling rounds from the mag, and wouldn't eject empty shells very good. My rifle had a late 2016 manufactured date.

Haven't seen any tracking updates since the rifle leaving Eagan MN. Got me nervous about maybe it has gone missing!

Maybe. I think it got put on a truck likely bound for Seattle and didn't get off that truck until it got to the spur hub in Spokane. Took the same amount of time getting back as going so that truck probably stopped at all the same spur hubs coming back as going.

Have the Long Ranger back. Did not get a chance to shoot. The bee guy showed up for hive maintenance.
Repair resolution: Adjusted bolt lockup and replaced magazine.

I have dry cycled it a lot, with new dry fire rounds and retesting of spent rounds I knew lockup/jammed 100% of the time. Zero jams with the bolt sticking out 1/8 inch. Bolt goes in all the way and is retractable anywhere along the full range of motion. So that problem is fixed. Still occasional random jam with a round cock-eyed in the breach even with the lever operated with authority and the rifle held up in proper firing orientation.

The magazine is a different design, but the bolt corner still gouges the top plate in the magazine. I may take a gun file to the corner of the bolt, doing the gouging, to extend the bevel on the bottom edge of the bolt.

As you may recall I did not sight in the rifle before sending it back to Henry. I did attempt that today with my laser bore sight, unfortunately I can't see the rifle sights and the laser POI simultaneously, so the adjustment ended up being a swag. I'll have my son check it out tomorrow when he comes to help move some furniture to upstairs.

Next post to share some pictures of the jam with the cock-eyed round.

What you see in this picture is where the round came up out of the magazine and jammed cock-eyed in the receiver.

This is what the jam looks like at the bullet end. The bullet missed going into the chamber and is lodged with the bullet tip in the gap between bolt guide cogs and the chamber. IMO this is a design flaw in the LR relative to the size of the .223 caliber bullet and cartridge neck diameter. With a smaller gap between guide cogs the bullet would be more likely to point into the chamber instead of missing it.

Sometimes. Can go several magazines before I get one.

5 round magazine in .223 caliber. No, but most often seen with the first round up, but not always.

That kind of hang-up doesn't seem like a simple break-in issue.

I don't expect break-in period to have any impact of future occurrences. It's still going to occur sometimes. You can see where the neck/bullet of the round lodged in the cog gap in the receiver is nearly the same diameter. Random jam is still going to happen until the receiver is redesigned/replaced with one where the cog gap is significantly smaller than the diameter of the neck/bullet round.

Probably less likely to occur, if ever, in the larger caliber LR rifles. I think the LRs use a common cog size in the receiver and on the bolt outer diameter. Only the inner cup diameter in the end of the bolt varies with caliber size along with chamber diameter and bore.
