New Long Ranger in .223/5.56

Shot the Long Ranger a lot at the gun range off highway 89 near Shasta CA. Will be sending the rifle to Henry for service.
1. bolt is slightly twisted in the receiver causing mechanical interference when closing the bolt, and is the cause of the binding feel I posted about earlier. It's also causing scraping in the top of magazine.
2. Every so often the bolt jams on closing. The ejector clip/spring is located on the front of bolt and seems to not always get out of the way, no matter how authoritative the lever is racked. Bolt is out about 1/8 inch and is literally jammed in place. Takes a great deal of effort to get it unstuck.
3. At 50 yds POI is way off from POA; 7-8 inches in elevation. Gun has both front and rear fixed sights.[update: took a closer look at the rear sight. the diamond insert has a set screw and can be adjusted up and down. wish I had noticed that yesterday. but enough adjustment to compensate for 7-8 inches in elevation at 50 yds? will have to see.]

I had a lot of fun shooting and figuring out what the issues were though. Isn't that part of what this is all about?

Both the front of the bolt and the receiver are cogged. The bolt cog does not align with the cog grove in the receiver.

OUCH! I'm sure HRA will be interested in those pics if you haven't already sent them. Something is out of whack (or a few somethings).

Sorry to hear about this, Mags, but my LR had to go back for a new bolt assembly as it simply froze up on plain old factory ammo and the lever wouldn't budge!

As you know, they'll take care of it, and maybe test fire it for POA/POI while they're at it!

I emailed them earlier this afternoon with pictures. Waiting to see what they say. I did not include the POA/POI results I got since I have figured out now how to adjust the diamond insert. Your 'wouldn't budge' sounds like my experience, except I got forceful with mine to get it unstuck. Have you had any bolt problems since getting it back?

Thanks, that is good to hear. Have a curiosity question for you to check out. Friend here in Shasta reloads. I made up a handful of dummy rounds, some with a live primer and some minus the primer. The ones minus the primer would not chamber. Bolt sticking out about an 1/8 of an inch. Wondering if your's does that.

Heard from Jeff at Henry this morning. They want the rifle sent back. No surprise there. Know they'll take care of it. Still a bummer, let-down, to have to send it in.

I'm sure the other reloaders with more experience will chime in, but that's a new one on me. I guess I've never tried to load a casing without a primer, so it's never come up before, and I haven't even actually reloaded any 308 yet; however, I have a bunch of empty cases, so I'll try the "no primer" experiment and see what happens. Now that I think of it, those cases haven't been resized and I haven't even bought any 308 dies yet, so it may not chamber for another reason (or be tight...).

Maybe I'm more forgiving than some, but It was a brand new platform and parts they'd never made before, so I give them some learning curve wiggle room.

s/n is mid 500s. ammo chk date is Jan 16, 2018. So the official born date is likely the 15th (Monday) or the 12th (Friday). Warranty Service request submitted this evening.

UPS experience. UPS Store won't accept firearms. Had to go to the UPS Customer Support Center and ring the front door bell. I rather like that. Better front door security than a UPS Store.

Sorry about your situation. The insert does make a big difference. That was my issue with a H009. A member of the club, that is on the 1000 yards camp, was not hitting the paper either. As I recall, we even tried a 3' piece of cardboard at 50 yards. After contacting customer service, Jeff reminded me of the insert. I adjusted it down very slightly and was able to hit center. It was an adjust on an open sight that I was not familiar with. In fact, it was the first one I have seen. Now, I think it is one of the better type of open sights.

My first experience with this type of sight too. Didn't get a chance to adjust it before sending the rifle in for the bolt jam problem I was having. My H009B has the stair-step type elevation adjustment. That insert is reversible for v or u notch.
