Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
Will do…..I anticipate them contacting me tomorrow or Tuesday.
Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
I'm watching this also, as I am having issues with both my 38/357 and 45 colt.

Where would you find plug gauges?Shakey Jake wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 9:27 pmBetter to measure the bore with plug gages if you have them. I have sets from .011 to .500 but use them in my business. It would be a bit expensive to purchase just for one issue. They come in either plus or minus sets. Henry will also let you know what the diameter of the grooves ( rifling) is and also the lands. They provided that info for me when I was having issues with my .327 Fed Mag

Addendum: Henry told me the .327 Fed Mag barrel was .303"
Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
So far, my experience with Henry Customer Service has been good. I bought a .357 single shot that shot lousy, they replaced the rifle for me with one that shoots good with right loads.
I shoot mostly cast, so I always slug the bores of my rifles. Jacketed bullets shouldn't be ab issue unless the bore is quite a bit oversized.

Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
Well, I received a case number for my .44 mag accuracy problem. Henry CS said that I should recheck scope Mount/rings for proper torque settings…..change scopes, if I have another to put on it.
If results are not satisfactory….remove the scope and mount. Reinstall the plug screws in the top of the receiver, and try the factory open sights. If none of the above helps…..contact them for a return shipping label.
I will try to get range time later in the week.

Sounds like Henry wants you to invest a lot of ammo on things you have already tried. I think it would be less expensive if you found a gun shop with a borescope.

Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
Well, this afternoon, CS sent me a return label to Rice Lake. I would like to try my Leupold 1.5-5x20 on it…just to validate my scope mounting abilities.
I really hope it was a bad Leupold scope!

Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
So, got some range time last Sunday with the Vortex scope mounted. Starting at about 30 yards initially looked promising. I had boresighted and then fired a round to verify the boresight, then another to verify if this thing would group properly. Again, things initially were promising- I was able to begin walking the rounds on target with the turrets and then started to see what I could only assume were "flyers", so for those I made no adjustments. I still did not want to believe the rifle was at fault. Eventually moved to 45 yards and ultimately the best "group" I could achieve was about 4". I'd wrung out quite a bit of $ getting to this point, and talked myself into "4 inch groups makes a dead deer"...but I couldn't really fool myself. Contacted Henry and they suggested sending her in. I know this rifle should be capable of better. Hopefully that will come to pass when I get her back.

Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
Going to range tomorrow morning with my X Series .44 Magnum. I am giving it one last chance to impress me.
If it does not show better groupings than 6 inches at 50 yds...it is off to Rice Lake.

Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
Well, guess what guys. I changed Leupold scopes before I went to the range. This range only has indoor 25 yard rifle lanes.
I was not able to use anything but a front rest…my shoulder had to be the rear rest. The table was not large enough to handle my Caldwell setup. Not an ideal situation……but I was there!
I started at 10 yds, adjusted vertical and windage…. moved to 20 yards, adjusted vertical…..and finally fired my last three shots at 25 yards. The rifle truly amazed me! The last three shots all touched each other in the center of the X ring. Group size was 3/4 of an inch.
I think it was a bad Leupold scope. So, instead of sending the rifle back to Henry, I will be sending the scope back to Leupold.
I am very pleased….with a proper front and rear rest….this rifle could be a real ‘Tack Driver.’

Happy you got it figured out, that can be frustrating. Sounds like your Big Boy shoots like it should.

Thank you GFK…..I got it now!
Re: All Weather Big Boy grouping issues
OP here with a follow up to my original post. Got the rifle back from Henry after the warranty claim- just want to say they did right by their pledge. replaced the barrel and magazine support (accuracy issues) and the buttstock and lever (cosmetic issues from the factory). Got it out to the range over the weekend, and was able to walk the scope/rounds into center bullseye with a repeatable 5 shot group. Turnaround time was acceptable/good at about 2.5 weeks. Don't hesitate to contact them if you're experiencing any issue, they'll make it right. This is a US manufacturer that deserves our business!
