Re: Side Gate Retrofit
A couple of guys in this thread have suggested I sell my H006M (not gonna do that), and buy a Henry .357 with brass receiver, side gate, and octagonal 20" barrel.
I would do that, but so far, I haven't been able to find the model # for one. Would somebody please tell me what it is?
Alternatively, the model # for one with a round barrel -- I could probably retrofit an octagonal barrel, tube?, forestock, and barrel band.

This is the site that I bought my Marlin 1894CS from (the link list .357 Henrys sold). It was not in stock, so I select to notify me. Within a couple of weeks, I was notified. Bought it and had it shipped to a local FFL. After inspecting and dry firing, I accepted it. That was over 3 years ago. Still happy with the purchase.

GFK, I must be missing something.
I do not see a .357 brass receiver with side gate listed.
What is the model #?

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
Sorry. Thought you just wanted a Henry .357 with a side gate. Henry does not make a brass .357 with side gate. This is a link to what Henry makes:

"Thought you just wanted a Henry .357 with a side gate".
That is correct - albeit with brass receiver and octagonal barrel. I am well aware that Henry doesn't make one, but a couple of folks here have told me to buy one anyway. I confess I don't know how that works, but I am willing to listen to them.
I still haven't been able to find any information about that King's gate model.....

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
Well, I don't know. I just went with what I knew. I knew Marlin made one at the time, so I bought one. If Henry is not making a brass .357 with an octagon barrel, contact them and make a suggestion. I think that is what prompted Henry to start added the side gate to some rifles, people submitted requests for one. Who knows, Henry may start making one.

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
The King's gate model is a Winchester lever action designed by Nelson King.
Winchesterguns.com wrote:A remarkable history. The Winchester Model 1866, often called the “Yellowboy” because of its distinctive brass receiver was a refinement of the earlier Henry toggle-linkage action, but included several important improvements developed by Nelson King, the Winchester factory manager. These improvements included a closed magazine tube, a right side loading gate and a wooden forearm.

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
So my question would be if Henry does not make a kings gate model in Brass (as of yet, they do have it in the steel) is the Brass frame for that action not strong enough for the gate ?

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
They make one in brass for the 30-30 and 45-70, so apparently the brass is strong enough.

Speaking altering rifles...
I have been playin around with the idea of buying a Henry single shot 44 mag., and
Having the chamber reamed to 444.

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
Back in the early days of TC Contenders (before we had Encores), re-chambering 10" and 14" 44 mag barrels to 444 was fairly common, despite the vicious recoil. It was really pushing the limits of what those old Contenders could take, though, and people did stretch Contender frames, even with factory 444 loads. Doubt it would be an issue in the Henry, though. If you're going to do it yourself, just remember the 444 has some taper to it. It's not just an extra long 44 mag.

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
Naw, the reaming is a little above my pay grade...
I'll have it done professionally, I contacted Henry a while back about their receivers.
They use the same one for pistol and rifle calibers.
So there shouldn't be an issue with it, if it can handle the 308's and 45-70's.
Then it can handle the t-4.
I also called JES about reboring a 30-30 single shot to 38-55.
He said no problem, and that I'd only have to send the barrel.
I figure if I can't get Henry to make what "I" want, I'll just do it myself.

Re: Side Gate Retrofit
Yes they make it in the larger frames with a gate but the 357 is not the same frame as the 45/70 or the 30-30. So maybe the frame is not strong enough with the extra material removed for the gate. I can't believe that Henry would not make a gate on the smaller frames if it was possible. So that makes me think that the frame is not strong enough for that material to be removed ?

They make the BB All Weather, the BB Steel X and the BB CCH with a side gate in 357.
