You don't need to see a one inch dot to hit it at 100 yards. You need to know where the dot is in relationship to what you CAN see.

If the 70mph Alberta wind isn't blowing (rare) I can get on an 8" target at 100 yds with open factory sights. I have to be either sitting and resting my elbow or crouching and resting elbow on knee. Out of 10 rounds, I'd get about 8 in the circle. Not the tightest groups. Depends on the ammo though, the best accuracy would be with Winchester 250gr LFN. 45 Colt though, not 44mag.

Let me also add that shooting at 100 yards with iron sights is like anything else - it takes practice. If you haven't done it, much, you have to be patient and keep at it. Don't expect to switch over from a scope or red dot and get great results, first thing. It is very much an acquired skill.

You'll also find that lighting conditions become much more critical with irons at this distance. We get a lot of dark, gloomy days, up here and those are not the best for this kind of shooting. I try to save this work for sunny days.

I didn't see where the OP said what scope he's using. If it's 4X he may benefit from more resolution.

Also, how many rounds have you shot through the gun? Sometimes it takes time.

Some days at the range, I'm 4" when i get there and 1" when I leave.

I think it's like everybody says; a little bit of this and a little bit of that, shave a 1/2 " here with a better load, shave an inch here with better sights, and so on.........

BTW does Henry, or any manufacturer guarantee a degree of acuracy?

I shoot against myself as I'm not good enough to compete. I know about what my average is on any given firearm and distance and just try to beat that.

Testing my handloads for my 44 Mag Mare's Leg with a full length stock. Testing for best accuracy/ grouping so I scoped her with a 3 - 9x. 100 Yards was tested on a different day and was unfortunately a windy day. Pictures speak louder than words.

Mare's Leg = Legal

Mare's Leg + Full Length Stock = Legal, no special paper work or licenses.

Shorten the barrel from factory length = Illegal.

Hopefully, SBR rules will be removed from the NFA and we can do the same here in the US without the paperwork and fee required now. That is a really nice short rifle.

Canada; we can pack that rifle around with the short barrel, but can't carry a revolver around on my own property let alone load it and fire it. Crazy.

Sorry Mr. RoC, did not notice you are Canadian. Here in the U.S. if you attach a rifle buttstock to a handgun you then have a SBR, which is only legal if one registers it in accordance to NFA rules. (200.00 dollars to uncle sam, bunch of paperwork, and then a long wait.) The mare's leg is considered a handgun in the USA. I just don't want to see anyone get in trouble if they are not aware of this. It is very cool with the rifle stock tho.

Thanks, I have watched that video a few times before. I had wanted an AR SBR, but a Big Boy with a 12" barrel would be way more fun. I got to shoot my Big Boy rifle at a bowling pin/steel target range yesterday for the first time. Way more fun that just shooting off the bench at a 100 yard gong. The bowling pin/steel target range would be perhaps even more fun with a Big Boy SBR.

I think there are some cheaper AR 500 gongs that will take most rifle calibers at 100 yards or more. It survives my powder puff loads from my Big Boy quite well of course. My 240gr plated loads are probably only doing about 1000 fps out of the Big Boy and probably 800 to 850 out of my revolvers. I am going to pick up a chronograph shortly and test them.

With the 1:38 twist in the .44mag, the lighter the bullet, the better. I am shooting 180gr Noslers .430's and as soon as the weather goes above freezing, I will check them out. I will post my results.
