Back to the Barn for my Big Boy

Yesterday after 40+ rounds my .357 Big Boy refused to fire even after recocking the hammer. The imprint on the primer seemed to be shallower than successful rounds. I contacted Henry and will be taking the rifle to UPS for shipping today. It was back there last year for the same problem. Frustrating as I was making one big hole after another until it quit.

That happened to me once, too. The Henry Big Boys have a two part firing pin and one part was failing. They turned it around inside of a week. HRAC has the best customer service, but it is only one of the many reasons to own a Henry.

Bummer - guess the only way to solve this kind of problem is to have a big boy carbine as a backup until the rifle comes back from the barn...

Why not just order the parts and do it yourself? I have extra springs and parts for my rimfire Henrys.

interesting .... we've fired hundreds of rounds through our Henry 357 and all's good .... it will be interesting to hear what they find is wrong with your rifle, looking forward to your report

My BBS 44 was a little stiff for the first few rounds. Wiped off the bolt and put a little light grease on it. 0.00 problems with er since

Or maybe at least dismantle it and look to see what's going on ?

Then again, maybe he doesn't want to send it to Henry in parts

I am not the most mechanical person in the world, my BIL puts me to shame. However I always found taking guns apart and putting them back together to be pretty straight forward.

I don't hardly have a gun for a day before I take it apart. Especially a used gun. I like to familiarize myself with it. Plus I just like all things mechanical. I had an issue with my 45-70. The magazine follower was catching on the lift gate. I trouble shot it myself. A quick call to Henry netted me a new mag tube and a assurance that if it did not take care of the issue I could send it in and they would find the issue. I had the part in 2 days. They are great to deal with.

I sent one Henry back for repairs but after that I learned to trouble shoot and fix them myself.

I got the rifle back today, exactly 3 weeks. They replaced the carrier and bolt, cleaned the chamber and other parts and test fired. I have to remount the scope and looking forward to trying it next week. Curiously, the hand writing on the note looks to be from the same person who worked on the rifle last year. Hoping for more lasting results this time.

After a few shots to re-zero my scope, everything went great. I was still getting about 1 inch groups at 50 yards with 2 different reloads.

That's the beautiful things about reloading you can tweek the load till you are getting the best accuracy from your rifle.
Your rifle will tell you what it really likes. You can keep the data you have & try something else if it's better great if it's not you can come right back where you are.
