2005 Trailblazer

Post by JEBar » Sun Sep 27, 2020 12:04 pm

at 15 years old, with 133,000+ miles my wife's 2005 Chevy Trailblazer is still perking along .... it was a dealer demonstrator with 1,500 miles on it when we bought it .... early on it had some frustrating electrical gremlins that took a while to get rid of .... about 5 years ago we had to replace the transmission .... a few days ago I noticed a low RPM miss .... still having OEM the plugs and plug wires I figured it probably wouldn't be a bad time to replace them .... after opening the hood and taking a good look, it quickly became apparent that changing plugs wouldn't be a simple operation .... I couldn't even see them .... years ago I'd of most likely started removing parts in an effort to expose the plugs .... now days I find its much easier to call our local independent garage .... as it turns out, doing so this time probably ended up saving me time and money .... not to mention a good deal of frustration .... when I picked it up from the garage, I learned that the plugs were worn but still OK and the coating on the wires was weather cracked .... knowing me, the mechanic replaced them .... instead of a distributor, each spark plug has its own coil and one of them had gone bad ... if I'd of replaced the plugs and wires only to find the low speed miss was still there .... at that point I'd of had to take it to have it fixed .... once again, knowing me the mechanic installed a top quality coil that wasn't cheap .... the total bill came to $400 which equals about 2 weeks payment on a new, comparable vehicle .... is this with this being the first money we've had to spend on it in a bit over 2 1/2 years, I'm happy .... our plan is to run it until something goes wrong that can't be fixed .... :D

At least she's got a beautiful back up to drive should anything else go wrong.

her Trailblazer has proven to come in very handy .... its size really helps with parking in tight spaces .... its very stable on slippery surfaces .... we wouldn't hesitate to crank it up and head for South Dakota .... its only disappointment has been its gas mileage which hangs around 15 mpg

I hear Ya about the gas mileage. I love my old 4-Runner, but it only gets about 18 around town and not much better on the highway.

It pays big to keep a good older vehicle running. My newest is a 2005 Town and Country. A smooth running, comfortable ride. And, lots of room for my gear.

Like you Jim, in years past I would have attempted minor work. These days, a good mechanic is as important as a good doctor.

Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

I have a couple older vehicles that I would rather drive than buying anything new. Especially when it comes to pulling the RV. I may not have 450HP and 1000ft lbs of torque like some of the new trucks do but my old 2006 Dodge Cummins does a great job with the new RV. It only has 85000 miles on it and I get a ton of compliments on it for its age. Around town its my 2005 Pontiac Bonneville. 24 mpg runs great has 141000 on it. Engine uses no oil and it doesnt have one leak underneath on it. It will probably out live me.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
