22 shot shells are great, 410 with light 2" or 2.5" even better. So much so single barrel 410's are often referred to as snake guns here in Aus.
I made the mistake of using 12ga once on a nest of snakes at about 4 yards. If anyone has shot a gallon jug of water at similar distance you can imagine what happened. It rained bits of snake :o

I have seen big snakes strike. I shoot from a distance.
