Home Air Conditioning

Post by Sir Henry » Sun Jun 26, 2022 10:00 am

I bought a 12K BTU a/c yesterday. The relative humidity was 87% because I had all the windows open to keep the house cool. The humidity is now down in the 50’s.

I installed it on the second floor where it would get into the 80’s in both temperature and humidity. It cools the entire upstairs and even the first floor to some degree. The humidity is really lowered. Of course it’s not a hot day today so I’ll have to wait for a scorcher to make a real judgment on how well it works.

I estimate it will cost me about $40 a month to run.

I spend five times that much on lattes. Ten times as much if you include gas costs to get just the lattes.

Put in a mitsubishi mini split with heat pump feature 3 years ago, with a unit on each floor. 17k uostairs and 12 k downstairs. Quiet you cant hear it. Best investment we ever made. Too old to wrestle with the window units.

Money well spent if it makes you more comfortable. It would be tough without A/C here.

Last night the low was 40F. It’s 61F in the house this morning. Humidity is right at 90% outside and 50% inside.

Nice. 30 degrees difference in our night time lows. Our low this morning was 70. Is that the only A/C you have in your house?

Yes the only AC. I ran it the day I installed it and haven’t needed it again. Chances are I’ll only need it a handful of days each month. A lot of people here don’t have AC and the few that do just have window units. Only business’ have central air.
