Source of Heat
I’m seeing some homes heated with oil. I’m not sure I would like it. Fluctuations in cost is one thing but the smell is another. The last home I lived in with oil heat was 50 years ago. People told me I smelled like oil.
How are oil furnaces today?

Re: Source of Heat
My mother's home is heated with oil, built in the 1950's. When that old furnace kicks in you can smell the oil a little. Not sure about anything newer if there is anything newer.

I’m seeing it in rural areas. I’ll try to make note when the homes were built.RanchRoper wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:40 pmMy mother's home is heated with oil, built in the 1950's. When that old furnace kicks in you can smell the oil a little. Not sure about anything newer if there is anything newer.

Re: Source of Heat
My parents home had an oil furnace. It was not too old when I sold their place. I never smelled oil.
Our camp uses an oil fired boiler. It's fairly old, but we don't smell any oil. The pump is pretty noisy though. There weren't too many options in the countryside. They also had propane for an old heater/stove.

Heated homes with electric, oil, propane and wood over the years. Never smelled oil except when I changed filter on tank. Heat with Propane currently which is around 60% of BTU"s vs oil. Also use a Mitsubishi Mini split with a heat pump for summer a/c and fall heat. Cold months heat with 3-4 cord of wood and furnace set at 60 degrees. It barely kicks on.

I guess I’m just spoiled with natural gas. I never have to worry out running out.

Natural gas not an option in rural areas. I wish it was as it burns about 200 degrees hotter than propane.

Re: Source of Heat
We live about 12 miles from the city limits, they just finished running natural gas down our road.
We will soon be switching from propane to NG.
