Rain Gauge

Post by JEBar » Fri Jul 16, 2021 10:16 pm

many times over the years we have wished we had a rain gauge but somehow never got around to getting one .... a few days ago I decided to make one .... the first three pictures below show the plastic rod hangers that we used when replacing all of the curtains in our camper .... the next couple of pictures show two of them pop riveted together .... the rest of the pictures show a 5" cylinder ordered from Amazon and it being inserted into the holder and then mounted on the deck we use with our camper .... now all we need is some rain but, unfortunately, not a drop is shown in our current long range forecast .. :?

I like the holder, the one that came with my gauge is metal and scrapes the marking off the glass.

Great idea, hope you get to give it a try soon.

It will give you a rough idea of rainfall, I much prefer this style, the inner tube is calibrated to the funnel size, usually it is around 25mm 1" when full but scaled in points or 0.2mm graduations. If the inner tube fills it overflows into the outer casing that holds around 300mm or one foot.
Not great with snow, ice and hail but will work with lighter falls of these catching them in the cone provided it melts before the cone starts to over flow.

A bit over 1" in mine Friday morning, just under 2" yesterday morning, rain hail sleet and snow all day yesterday so guessing at least another inch. I will check once it is light but we are fast approaching 3 feet of rain so far for the year.

looks good to see at least a chance of rain in the next week .... next Friday they say "Hot with intervals of clouds and sunshine; watch for a strong thunderstorm in the afternoon" ..... no to crazy about having a strong thunderstorm but this area can sure use all the rain it can get

Wish I could not often I will say it but we have had just about enough for a few weeks at least. Close to 30" up until the end of June and with what we have had so far this month we would be close to 3 feet for the year now.
This is the little creek on the farm lunchtime Sunday after Saturdays rain and snow, had already dropped a couple of feet. Not a bad flow when you consider it only starts around 10 miles upstream
Image
We have water coming out of the ground everywhere, a nice flow coming out of this wombat burrow, it is about 200' higher than the creek and about 100' below the crest of the hill
