Oh no the heat went out !

Post by fortyshooter » Tue Mar 16, 2021 3:52 pm

This afternoon I felt it getting chilly in here and looked at the T-stat and saw 65F but I keep it at 68-69....oh oh!

It's a natural gas furnace so I went out to check it out. It was in SAFE mode and called our Heating repair company to come as backup if I needed.
Said they would be there in an hour. So I check the igniter which is the glowing stone type and they can fail anytime and I keep a few on hand.
That had been in there a long time so I was going to remove it and take a look. Couldn't lay my hands on my 1/4 drive ratchet and about that time the repair guys show up.
Well I turned it over to them and thats what they found...a burned out igniter. They thought it was cool I had the part on hand.
Cost was 80 bucks so not that bad a deal. Now to find where I put my 1/4 drive ratchet which you need to get it out!

I have an electric furnace and it seems that the most likely thing to go bad is the sequencer so I always keep a new one on hand. It's a easy fix and has saved me a lot over the years.

That's a good feeling when something like that happens and you are prepared for it. (You'd have found the 1/4" sooner or later.)
I've got a wood-burner so when my heat goes out I have to get my coat and find where the dog hid my gloves.

My central heating isn’t all that old so is in great condition. The natural gas insert fan motor is starting to make noise and I shut it off for the season. I’ll deal with it this summer when they run tune-up specials.

I only use the central heat to bring the house up to 70 degrees from 6 to 9 am. Then it drops to 52. Around 7 am the insert would kick in and half the house would be 68 and the other half slower drop to about 62 by winters dark.

I could always walk over to the insert for a few minutes if I felt cold in the 62 degree hobby room. The insert is blowing about 140 degrees. You can only be a foot from it for a few seconds.

I'll pick up another 1/4 drive and put it with the extra igniter next to the unit.

Our heat went out during before our snow storms and during the coldest week if the year. They found a few things wrong, starting with the blower assembly. The guy got us fixed up quick, put us out 700.
