Firewood done for the year

Post by Hatchdog » Tue Jun 16, 2026 10:15 am

I’m done for the year with my firewood preps. Other than enjoying a nice warm fire that is. :D A neighbor had several trees cut down and gave me the wood. I’m thinking I’m good for three seasons with what I was given.

Split and in the woodshed for winter 26-27.

Still in log length, winter 28-29.

I do. It’s free and I keep my fires hot. Plus clean the stovepipe every year. Last year I had a bunch of fir and sure enjoyed that.

I wish I had that opportunity. As you know Sir Henry, this area is mostly pine, fir and larch. With a little birch, cedar and aspen scattered here and there.

Not yet there.

Started this morning on moving and stacking the pile.

Although in my opinion September is the best month of the year it is indeed getting to that time of year to consider firewood. I DON’T WANT TO!

I need to get busy cutting some, but it's still blame 90+ degrees. Maybe by the end of the month it will cool down and I can get busy. I have a few downed oaks and one hickory to cut. I have about a half a cord left from this past winter.

It’s getting to the time of the year when the Larch (Tamarack) needles start to turn orange in the upper elevations. Such a pretty sight with the orange mixed in with all the green. Same with the Aspen BRM mentioned, a beautiful yellow with the green pines. Around here the Aspen is mostly in the creek bottoms which make for some beautiful scenery.

I certainly remember those days. ;) We were lucky back in Virginia. Our acreage was covered in hardwood, and we cut the deadfall every fall and spring in the cooler weather to avoid snakes. We usually cut and split about a cord and a half to cure for the coming winter. It got stacked on one side of the 12x12 woodshed. Wood from the previous year's work, dried and waiting for the current year would be on the other wall. :)

A family friend of Miss Tina's had a Black Angus cattle farm about ten miles away. Tina had known the owner since she was a little girl, and we were one of the few non-family members with permission to fish the five ponds on the five hundred acres. He told us to feel free and cut any deadfall that we saw. A win/win for both.

The woodstove we had heated the house so well, we often cracked the windows to let in fresh air with snow on the ground outside.
