my modest talents
first I gotta say yalls woodworking skills put mine to shame
but I do have some talent
I have built a boat and I build cigar box guitars
my boat is a micro boat designed by paul elkins and with modifications by me
it turned good enough for the likes of me
power by minn kota
deep cycle under the hatch
the cigar box guitars is another thing all together
I wanted to make all the instruments for a jugband for my kids for Xmas
so I got a jug and a washboard a wash tub bass was made next then I found out about diddly bows ( a one string cigar box guitar )
then I built I 1 string ...then a 2 string ...then a 3 and a 4
that was just before last Xmas (2019) and now it is april I have sold 3 and have orders for 3 more
I have 7 sitting around my house ...now I need to learn to play an song on these things
but I do have some talent

Re: my modest talents
I like the guitars. Beautiful job.
Diddly Bos. That's where Bo Diddly got his stage name. I used to watch a number of videos of a guitar player, Scott Ainslee, who travelled a lot, and mainly played a steel fronted acoustic the name of which escapes me. He told a story about the origin of diddly bos during his presentation at our kids school. A very interesting talk. We picked up two CDs which he autographed. "Terraplane" and "Jealous of the Moon."
Here is a bit of his intro to the cigar box...

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

Re: my modest talents
I am familiar with Mr Ainslee
I dont do anything without research so I watched a lot of you tube before building
I dont build them the same way that others do, but mine sound just as good
it is funny to hand them to a person who plays guitars profeshly
they look at it with disdain then they strum it then they smile and play it a bit and ask what I want for one
as for planes and boats I dont mind the danger ...in fact I like it

Re: my modest talents
update:
I still can't play a song, but all say my playing has improved
I have built 34 guitars but only have 7 here at the house ...folks seem to love them
4 strings now too
Got another boat the works ... it is a canoe that has a damage end
I will cut it an about 3\4 the length and give it a transom and deck
Install controls flex seal the whole thing and presto BOAT

I have trouble sawing a 2 by 4 in two. That takes more talent then you are giving yourself.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

FAROUT!!!
Those are some pretty good looking plunkers you got there. And I LOVE that boat!!!!!
I *kinda* build the same thing:
This one is a 5 string and its a real antique. My guess is some of the parts could be 80 years old. I used the neck from an Old Kraftsman 5 string ... and I have no idea when Singer last sold sewing machine oil in 1 gallon cans.
I saw the Tobac Oil cans hanging around the stuff in Cracker Barrel restaurants. It took me months to find one to buy. The neck is a 5 string. I just sold this one. I started playing finger style guitar back in the 1960's, but I only do clawhammer style on banjo. These "Canjo" things sound pretty good. Cans used to be cheap. Now they are "collectable" and expensive. I might like to do one using a Marvel Mystery Oil Can. It's a marvel, it's a mystery!
All of these things build up like a cigar box bo-diddley. This here one plays and sounds just like a real double bass. It uses weed wacker strings.
Currently I'm building a Lap Steel Guitar. I think it might be a bit easier for me to play since I went and got old. A lot of guys build these out of 2 x 4's. It's a VERY easy build and they sound great. I think you can buy a kit for under $100 ... but you have to supply your own 2 x 4. I'm kinda patterning mine off an old National Airline.
