It's Done!

The chest is done. :P

I am very pleased with the way it turned out, and more importantly, so is the boss. She had input along the way of course, but even she was amazed with the final product.
I had the end result in my mind, but the combination of the black walnut and maple ended up being stunning after four applications of the watco oil blend and two coats of beeswax.
Miss Tina said it is prettier than the cradles I made for the grandkids. I don't know if I'll go that far... but... it is a good result. :D

I'll let you guys decide.

So, here is the chest:
The wing doors fit the way they do because Miss Tina wanted them to hang over a half inch or so in order for the overhang to allow her to open them. She didn't want a handle or knob on the wings.

Miss Tina filled it with yarn:

Set it up to use:
The bookmatched pattern on the ends really pops in this pic. Miss Tina is really hard pushed to choose a favorite pattern, but since the chest is lightweight, she can spin it and work from either side. She doesn't have to choose. :P The yarn feeds out the top and she crotchets without having to mess with the skeins. When it's time to refill, just open a wing and feed in another skein.

Zoomed in you can see the grain on the wing top and the waxed finish:
Tina said one wing has a bearded old man, and the other is a dragon.

Finallly, you can see the chest standing duty beside Miss Tina's chair.

For comparison, a couple of the Grandkids Cradles...
One is wide knotty pine and made for my Granddaughter's American Girl doll. The other is Mahogany and Brazilian Cherry with Birdseye Maple trim. That one was made for my Grandson, and then used for his new baby sister as well. In the ten years between them, it was used to store afghans and decorate the hallway between bedrooms.

I think this sewing chest comes close, but doesn't beat 'em. 8-)

Beautiful work, Marine. It's easy to see how that design will make her needle work projects go so much easier. Thanks for sharing the photos of the cradles, too. Outstanding craftsmanship.

I sit and stare at the wood color and grain patterns you bring out in your superbly crafted projects, Marine. You chose the correct adjective yourself....stunning!
You do beautiful work.

Tell Miss T I really liked her suggestion on the wing overhangs. Sans any handles, that has got to be so much easier to open. It also makes the tops look "cleaner." All-around collaboration you two did was great.

What's next? ;)
